What to consider when you name a cat

Do you consider a cat's physical appearance, attitude, action(s)? I have a terrible time in naming cats. For example, I've named a stray that I regularly feed, "Kitty." He seems to recognize and respond to that name.
Also have to admit that some names are downright stupid. For example, many years ago, my sister named one of our cats "Puppy." Whoever heard of a cat being named "Puppy" anyway?
So far, I haven't had to worry about assigning names to cats, but if I ever do, I know that I'll find your suggestions very helpful! Thank you all in advance.

I always consider the cat's attitude and personality traits when naming them, for example, my cat is named Velcro, because ever since she was a kitten, she had claws of pointyness and tended to stick to everything she touched ;)
I tend to stay away from "people" names, unless they have a meaning that's relevant to the cat's personality, and I also don't like corny, common names like "Goldie" (for yellow cats), "Smokey" (for grey ones), "Mittens", stuff like that. They're overused and undercreative in my opinion.

Exactly! You've pinpointed the problem I have in naming cats. Except for the other stray I've named Maxie, the other names I've given to cats were pretty dull --- Puss and Kitty. How common is that?
I thought that your cat's name Velcro is very imaginative and unique.

Ok people are going to think I am weird or totally dementd but I just ask my cats what there name is. Yes people I actually ask my cat there name. Most of the time if I ask all of a sudden I will think of a name and that is the name I will give that cat. We currently have 3 cats. One is a gray tabby and from the moment I saw him I thought he was totally precious and so that is what I named him. We have a famale white with black spots and coming up with a name for her was a bit harder untill Iasked her and then I thought of Alexis so now her name is Alexis. Over last summer we adopted a black cat. I wanted to give him a more mystical name because he was always beying mysterious. so I after askinghim what his name was I thought of Onyx.
Sometimes just sitting with your cat in your arms for a few minutes and talking to them it just hits you that they should be called this name and it kinda fits.

That's a neat way of going about it, I've named a couple of cats that way, "Ai" was a lovekitty, she always had to be on your lap or getting attention so she just seemed to pick the name for herself, and "Tiger" was feisty and territorial to go with her stripes...

My cats, those still with me and those who have gone, have all had individual names. My first cat as a child was called Tibby. She came with the name Fancy, but I changed it. Her three kittens were Tricky, Mickey and Dickie. My children's cat was Patches,
Then came Divot and Baffy whose first Dad was a golf pro. Baffy is for Baff, a name for an obsolete golf club shaped like a slotted spoon and used to scoop the ball out of the carriage ruts. When Baffy left, she sent Josie who is a calico and named for her coat of many colors. Divot sent Peaches who came with that name and is from Georgia, a beige tabby.
Arthur came with the name R-2 which was changed to a close sounding name. Paisley is another calico. Lady Claire was a black green-eyed Turkish Angora; I don't know how she got that name, but she was a very regal lady.
Naming a cat is a great honor and should be considered carefully. Sometimes cats tell you their names.

wel personally as i work in a cat home when i consider naming a cat i always think of indiana jones with his huge sword out waving it in my face. So yes when naming a cat you must take into consideration the ammount of face mask you put on when going to empty the trash into a letterbox in china.
anyway some typical names for cats are made up and not even allowed in this country. Some others include naked ladies with humungous melons jus slicing and dicing.
also one final footnote would be to take off your shirt and dance infron of your christmas tree whilst singing the lords prayer and killing a rabbit.
so yeah tyson is the best name for a cat!
hopei helped x
