How many people in your family? I have 5 teens and myself and spend probably $500 a month, sometime more, sometimes less.

Sadly, I spend close to $200 a week for a family of 7. That includes cleaning products, diapers, formula, etc etc. What scares me is that 4 of my children don't even eat a whole lot yet. I have 5 year olds who eat 1 full serving between the 2 of them, a 2 year old who eats perhaps a quarter of a serving, and a newborn still on formula. I know things will change as I don't have to buy diapers and formula, but I will have to buy more food. Right now it's not so bad. I'm on a program to recieve free milk, eggs, peanut butter, cereal, and baby formula. I supplement the formula with a generic brand that costs me less than $40 a month, so that's all I'm spending on that. I buy the cheap diapers, $7 a package, and still have 2 kids in those. I shop at a wholesale club and buy meat in bulk, then do the remainder of the shopping at Walmart super center as I found they are the cheapest. I wondered recently what I'll do when all my kids are gone, because I'll be clueless as to how to shop and cook for only 2 people!

Diapers and formula take a huge cut of your budget though! Those are expensive necessities. I didn't include most of my cleaning products and HBA products in the amount I posted. That's pretty much JUST food for us. I don't think you're doing too bad considering you have diapers and formula alone!

I agree, most baby items just aren't worth it in generic form. I have certain items I refuse to buy generic in too... my toilet paper, shampoo & conditioner and my soap.

Aside from diapers and formula, I don't spend too much on cleaning products and toiletries. I buy generic shampoo and body soap. The only ones in the house that get high priced stuff are the babies (generic baby soap is not as good as Johnson's and Johnson's) and I buy myself Head and Shoulders, as the generic for that isn't good either.

I buy a ton of food items from no frills places such as Aldis and Save-a-Lot. I also use the Dollar General and Dollar Tree to get low cost non food items such as cleaning products.

Yea I'd say that the NON-food items that we buy each month is an easy $400 or more.. I've actually been working on cutting that back though..Like last week we only got $160 worth of stuff compared to the usual $250.. Thats one thing about living here in the U.S now that kills me..the cost of stuff is INSANE..i so miss places like No Frills ya know...that store always rocked for me

$500 a month for 6 people, you deserve a gold star!!! That means you're spending about $21 per week per person - $3 a day WOW! How do you mange to feed a teenager on $3 a day. Please share your tips. There are 4 of us in my household and 1 dog and I'm averaging about $1000 a month. I'm doing something very, very wrong. I buy in bulk, I stay away from processed foods, I don't buy named brands, we use cloth towels instead of paper towels, I use coupons (but usually they don't have coupons for non processed foods), I buy on sale and I still spend a heap of money. Please share your shopping methods. I'm glad to know that someone has got a great system to save money on groceries.

I honestly don't use coupons too often as I find that they end up being more expensive most of the time compared to store brand items of the same quality. I shop at the no-frills stores ALL the time, Aldis and Save-a-Lot (most often), along with buying large bulk items on various things from a place called Gordon Food Service. Those bulk items generally tend to be store brand also, which helps save too. I do confess that about 2x a year I go on a binge spending if I get some extra funds from some place and do stock up shopping on things like peanut butter, jelly, chicken, spices, etc. and that helps keep my regular shopping down. Those binge shopping trips are usually done IF I get some money in that I'm not expecting or coincide with tax time when I get back. On those trips I can and do spend sometimes up to $1,000 but that lasts the year pretty much. I also every few months do my "non-food" shopping, about $300 or so, for items like feminine products, shampoos, soaps, etc.

My mother spends a lot of money in a month. I think that she spends around what you spend or probably a little bit more. There is me her oldest daughter, then she has three other kids, and our grandmother and then her. So that's six people in all. She buys milk a lot of my youngest sister and then this other milk for my grandmother.

Same size family then as me, 6. It's so expensive! I wondered how many others spend as much or more than me or if I'm "average" in what I spend. LOL Thanks for the input!

I actually think that our spending is going to go up now that prices are going up. We are all ready trying to cut back on what we buy so much. But it's hard to do that. But as far as being average I think yeah you might be average. I've heard of people that spend more than that and then they throw out a lot of food which is just awful.

There are 7 in my family...we have 14, 13, 10, 9, 6 and myself and my boyfriend. We spend anywhere between $200-$300 per week on groceries. This typically doesn't count the cleaning supplies (which we buy once a month) BUT it does include toilet paper and necessities like that. We look for the cheapest deals possible and if we can buy in bulk, we will. Any deals that are 10 fo $10 we typically use (especially on bread) because it gives us 10 loaves of bread for dinners and sandwiches and could last us almost 2 full weeks. I have seriously thought about doing the coupon clipping but I don't know where the best place to get those are as we only get the newspaper on Saturdays and Sundays. Any information on that would really help me out as well:D

Sorry I forgot to add...That $200-$300 usually lasts almost a full 2 weeks...not every week. I have also found that meal planning makes for an easier budget when it comes to meal shopping. If you decide exactly what is going to be for breakfasts, lunches and dinners you can spend less as that is the only thing that you will buy.

I guess it depends too on where we're all located. $40 in groceries in one place may buy nothing in another! LOL I just feel like so much of my income is going to feeding the troops and getting there to the store to do it!

In our house, there is me, a teen aged daughter the man folk and three large dogs. We spend about $250 per month. I do not buy dog food, I worked at an animal shelter so I haven't bought dog food for about a year and we still have enough stock to last another 6 months. Thank goodness!

Hello Hockeygal I'm a student and I'm living in the faculty campus and I live with other 4 colleges and we eat together, so is hard to say how much I spend on food. But I think a little hard I believe that I spend around 100$ per month only on food. Sometimes more, sometimes less, it depends were we eat or if we all eat together. Take care and have a great day ScarFace

I shop at no frills stores most of the time and Gordon Food Service (it's a store open to the public but that caters to the food industry). GFS has great prices on stuff and huge quantities, much like Sam's Club, but without the cost of a membership. Some of their stuff isn't less expensive so you have to watch but a majority of it is well worth the trip there to pick up large quantities for big families. I also buy a lot of "sale" items. This week one store had soda on sale, Pepsi 24 oz. 6 packs @ 4 for $9. That's a great price so I stopped in 3x!

There are 6 in my family. Three teenage boys, one 7 yr old girl, my hubby and myself. I also run a daycare and provide the food for the day. I spend $200 a week on groceries. It is rediculous the amount I spend and by the end of the week, we are scrambling for something to eat.

I spend about $400 a month for 3 people, give or take. That includes most of our toiletries and cleaning supplies. I feel like that is more than I should spend, and I wish I could pare it down a little more. But I feel like I am already pinching every penny I can.

Because we are only four in our family and we are all grown up, our grocery bills just amount to at least 1500 pesos (roughly 34USD) per grocery day. We do groceries every other week, so sometimes it's 68 USD per month or 102USD, depending on how many weekends the month has.

Here lately we have been spending between $500 - $700. The prices are getting crazy and some thing I can't cut back on. I have 4 kids (2 are teens)but my expensive on is my dad. He has a bad heart and is on a special diet so it gets pricey quick.
