How to train assistance dogs

I am looking for resources for how to train assistance dogs for the handicapped. I have a puppy that I want to start training to be an assistance dog for my dad when the puppy is old enough to be properly trained, so I am looking for any information I can find on how to train dogs to do assistive tasks. I know that there are schools that dogs can be sent to or that you can get pre-trained dogs, but since I can't afford such things I would like to train an assistance dog for my dad myself. If anyone knows of any good websites or books that I could get that would help I would be very grateful.
