Federal appeals court says Treasury Department is violating the law by keeping dollars the same size and feel.A federal appeals court ruled Tuesday that the U.S. Treasury Department is violating the law by failing to design and issue currency that is readily distinguishable to blind and visually impaired people. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit upheld a 2006 district court ruling that could force the United States to redesign its money so blind people can distinguish between values. Do you have any thoughts on this issue? Do you think money should be distinguishable for the blind? If I had sight issues I think this would be helpful. http://money.cnn.com/2008/05/20/news/money_blind/index.htm?cnn=yes

That is extremely interesting. I think that blind people should already be helped, and if they weren't, they should have someone to do grocery shopping for them. This might make them feel ab-normal, but it would save everyone else a lot of time and effort, in not having to resize money. What do you guys think? ~Noodlebrain0

Some elder people have other people to help them. The same thing could be done for those who are blind, which would create new jobs.

Exactly! That would fix some of the economic results of the hell-hole that we are in right now. ~Noodlebrain0

I had a blind cousin so I know how hard it was for him to do money. He had his money folded a certain way so he could pay for things but he could never tell if he was getting the correct change back. I for one would seriously think they should either get money or a special machine for the stores that cna use a special money card and talks so that they know how much is going to come off the card(so they can't get cheated) and that it has to have a pin and the keypad have braille on it so they can punch it in. Something needs to be done because just because they are blind doesn't mean they have to stop living and doing things. Which not being able to handle money correctly limits things a bit unless they have someone right there all the time. So it has my vote.

You know I have to admit I would love to see them change the sizes of the paper currency so that the blind would be able to go shopping with cans and not have to worry about having someone carry and count there money for them. There are so many who are blind who are completely independent with the help of a seeing eye dog and the ony thing they need help with is making shure that they pay the correct ammount of money for there store purchases. Over all I think it is a great idea.

I think that is a very good idea to have. I never thought about this until now. Blind people are limited on alot of things in life. There are several things that have been made adaptable for them but many more need to be done for them also. If I had eyesight issues, I would sure want someone to help make life easier for me also.

Still bugged by this one. Sometimes it feels like some people have a problem. That's unfortunate. But, then everyone else has to run around in circles because a few people have a problem. How does that make sense? I use credit cards or debit cards for nearly everything. I go weeks without cash in my wallet. There are only a few places I go where they only take good old cash. And, push comes to shove, I probably do not need to go there. (Off the top of my head, the carousel and.. adult entertainment clubs where the ladies like to be paid in dollars. (I haven't been there since my friend Jon's first bachelor party. He's remarrying this year.) So, because I choose to use hard cash so rarely, it is difficult for me to imagine why a blind person would be in such a tizzy over it. Certainly, I have a hard time imagining that America needs to reprint all it's dollars for this. We have a long running tradition of money in one shape and size. We like our green money. We have machines to suck in dollars of a certain shape and spit out change. We have machines in banks to count stacks of specific sized dollar bills. All of that would have to be altered or repurchased if the size of money changes. We could change the color of our money, but .. again.. we like our green money. I like our green money. I do not want it to change. And I feel a bit irritated.

i always thought that USD is plain boring. you can never know how much you are carrying in a glance. i've seen tons of notes in various colours that makes it easy for everybody (with or without visual impairment) a few years ago the govt (i live in malaysia) phased out the old notes and introduced the new ones. same colours as before (we have blue MYR1, green MYR5, red MYR10 and blue-green MYR50) but the sizes are different (some are a bit smaller than the previous one but are pretty neat) and each denomination has a raised marking with different shapes and sizes so the blind and visually impaired people can identify the money easily i still think coloured notes are great for us the non-impaired people. you can give a quick look on how much you are carrying like 'hey, i have 3 reds and a few greens. that should be enough'
