Hi there... I am a voracious reader and I have been looking for the benefits of long-term reading online: http://www.family.org/entertainment/A000000969.cfm And here they are.... Research shows that avid readers: 1. Read better, write better and concentrate better. 2. Are quicker to see subtitles. 3. Have an easier time processing new information. 4. Have a better chance for a successful, fulfilling adult life. 5. Have many interests and do well in a wide variety of subjects. 6. Develop an ability to understand how other people think and feel. 7. Acquire the ability to sift information and to understand how unrelated facts can fit into a whole. 8. Tend to be more flexible in their thinking and more open to new ideas. 9. Weather personal problems better without their schoolwork being affected. 10. And with the explosion of information in the workplace, only avid readers can stay well informed with relative ease. so will you encourage your kids or friends to read more?

I would agree with all those points. Absolutely. I think they apply to people who want to read and enjoy reading. I'm not sure you can force anyone to read more, but of course children should be given every encouragement and opportunity for reading and they will hopefully develop a love of books and reading.

I enjoy reading, and tend to do so more during the summer. I'm not sure why I associate reading with summer, I'm guessing because that's when I read what I wanted during the summer. I am looking for a new book to read now, as I've read my favorite book(The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay) for about the 15th time now. I think it's great that they've done a study to actally prove all of the things listed above, but some of them seem like common sense to me. Such as #8, the more you are exposed to, the more flexible you are. When I have kids, I will definitely encourage them to read, I think it has more benefits than the ones listed above as well.
