My Dog is either Brilliant or Psychic!!

Schatzie - Brilliant - or Psychic
United States

One of my dogs, Schatzie my alpha female also my avatar, is either brilliant or psychic. Now this little one is fearless in all things with one exception.. thunder! At even the slightest sound of thunder she become this scared, shivering little bundle of fur. She can hear it long before I can and takes off to her "safe" spot, squished behind the toilet bowl in one of the bathrooms. Last night we had warnings of impending storms with tornados coming closer to our area now they were still about an hour or so away from us. Here is the weird thing that happened. Each time the warning cut into the TV shows I was watching she immediately took off to her safe place. Now the first time this happened I thought it was coincidence but she did it each time all night until I switched off the TV. Now we never got any of the storms just the TV warnings so she could not have heard distant thunder. How in the blazes could she know that the TV was announcing warnings to her greatest fear? Has anyone ever experienced anything like this or is my little one just plain spooky?

Hi Heather is it possible that she could hear it on the TV and she thought it was actually happening?

No it could not be that as there is just the initial alarm sound then a plain red screen with a list of all the endangered counties and a male voice reading them out loud.

Definitely spooky and very very clever! I often think that when Dogs are very close to their owners they do begin to understand the words that are being said or the that the tone of voice means different things , not just that of their owner but with all humans. Maybe schatzie was picking up on the things and way the warnings were given? Well either way I think she is a vey clever (not to mention very cute) doggy indeed! xxx

sometimes creatures, dog for that matter, associates words to something..just like your dog, when your dog heard "storm" she knows that it is associated with thunder and hides. maybe when it thunders she hears you talking there is a "storm" or something then comes thunder. now she knows that storm is thunder!

All animals have a built in sense of weather changes, some more so than others. Much like a persn with arthritis senses impending weather changes it has a lot to do with the barametric pressure.

Animals are a lot smarter than we humans sometimes. Animal instinct kicks in and they just *know* when something is going to happen with the weather. My Mother's old dog used to know when it was going to rain and she would come into the house and curl up under the bed, often just ahead of the bad weather.

I bet I know what it is!! lol Your dog is brilliant! Let me explain why, my parents had this one chihuahua named Sassy and she was one smart smart dog. She hated getting a bath and knew that word inside and out! Anytime someone would say Sassy and bath in a sentence together, she'd disappear. We all knew where she was - under the bed but still, then we had to start spelling it b-a-t-h, well Sassy learned what that meant too!! lol She was a smart dog! Even today my parents dogs and mine know what bath is and bye byes and so on because they're pretty darn smart. Now your dog heard the words storm on tv and knowing what that was, she went and hid. So I'd say she's brilliant!! lol

Schatzie says thanks and she agrees with you. Chihuahuas may be small but they are very smart.

My chihuahuas ( I have 5) do not like the thunder . Once it starts thundering they want someone to hold them. Or they will get on bed and hide under blanket

I have a doberman pincher that is afraid of thunder. Since she came to us fully grown we have no idea whether something scared her or if she has always had this fear. Did the TV warnings have that honking noise that they use to get our attention? Dogs are Smart!

After talking with a friend yesterday about this "phenomenon? " I believe it may be the attention getting sound that she recognises. That that is probably what triggers her response but that is still pretty smart of her.
