Have you ever asked your local government representative a question?

Have you ever asked your local government representative (e.g., member of parliament) a question and actually received a response? if so, has the response answered your question? We have had occasion recently (within the last month) to telephone our local MP three times about an important national and international issue. We end up each time leaving a message on their answering machine. We have never even received acknowledgment of our calls. We plan to start calling each day from now on until we get some sort of response. It makes one believe that our representatives do not really represent us when they don't even acknowledge our existence.

Yes, I have done so and i have received a response but more often than not, the response was made by one of the staff of congressman or representative. And come election time or neatr it, its your congressman or representative who would be writing you a letter (again prepared by his staff) I guess its the samem all around the world. Either they don't respond or if they do, its actually just one of theiur staff who replies. Wish you luck

At least there was a response of some description, not just ignored.

Yes, all the time. We have excellent senators and representatives here and they always get back. The last time I had contact with them, I sent an ebay sponsered form letter to my local representative and senator regarding some changes being proposed that would make it necessary for people selling on ebay to have auctioneer's licesnses in Pennsylvania. Well, both my state senator and my state representative wrote me letters and it turned out that ebay had their facts wrong (as usual). Only people seling for others may need that license, not people selling merchandise that they own. I've come to expect this kind of attention from our local politicians but in this case even I was impressed by the length of their reply letters and the research and thought that went into the responses.

Wow, I'm impressed. That's how it is supposed to work. Responsive and helpful too.

Never local, well unless asking the mayor of my town who lived across the street a totally non-political question when I was like 11 counts. I have written to two presidents though. Bill Clinton actually wrote me back. It was his signature in ink, I couldn't believe it. That was briefly after the Columbine incident and I had written a poem, with a short note attached and sent it to the White House. Bush doesn't answer my letters, but honestly I'm not surprised there.

Amazing that Bill wrote back.
