Which do you prefer: the ocean or the mountains/wilderness?

I love the ocean and everything about it. Its creatures, its mystery, its majesty. I'm just in awe of it because there's so much in it, so many secrets that humans haven't even scratched the surface when it comes to exploring. You can't help but think that any creature can exist there, even the kind we've always thought were mythical. The ocean's power is also immense--it can swallow up entire towns! Its "moods" run the gamut from one extreme to the other. Being near the ocean is being overwhelmed by nature's beauty and power. Plus, there's something so soothing about it, even when its stormy.

as far as living or spending any amount of time in....i prefer the wilderness. but the ocean intrigues me in much the same manner as you. i often wonder why we, the USA, spend so much money as a nation exploring outer space, when we have a whole world of mystery under our oceans. it would be fascinating to find out a little more about what lies in wait below the water's surface. nice topic.

Good point! I think it's more interesting to explore what's under the sea rather than deep space because the latter is just more colorful and vibrant. But I guess I can understand why scientists would be keen on exploring outer space--maybe they just want to discover new worlds beyond our own, or that life exists in other planets. They might also want to find out if man can thrive on other planets, just in case something happens to ours. Thanks for replying!

It's difficult to choose - like you I too love the ocean, and love traveling by boat, but then I am a qualified mountaineer and have always loved trekking. Though I had to give up climbing because of a massive surgery, I still do trek on hilly and mountainous paths, sometimes spending nights in the outdoors in a small tent that I sometimes carry. Most days, (which unfortunately is rare today) I just stop at a lodge or or hut on the route that I am trekking along.

I have climbed mountains and I have been to some wilderness areas, and I love to be in such places. Now I live on the coast and I really enjoy being able to walk to the beach and feel the ocean breeze on my face. Sometimes I go when it is stormy and watch the power of the waves. Other times I walk along the tide edge and listen to the regular rhythm of waves breaking on the shore. It is the most relaxing sound I know. I also see many seabirds and, if I'm lucky, I might see a seal or a dolphin.

It's great that you have experienced so much of the great outdoors! Truth be told, each environment has its own beauty.

I prefer the mountains and wilderness. I know the ocean is so immense, all powerful, soothing, and mystical, but it is scary sometimes too. I'm not much of a sea person or a beach person for that matter. The beach and the waves are nice and I agree they are very soothing when you just want to do nothing and relax, but I guess most people that are born near the ocean really fall in love with it. I have been very little times to the beach and while I enjoy it I still prefer the mountains. There is something soothing about the mountains and wilderness as well. I think that the complete connection with nature that you might enjoy while being in the ocean I enjoy while hiking. Thre's something about the trees, the fresh minty air and the animals that just make me immensly happy. So, yes definitely a laand person. I also don't like the ocean because I have a great fear of water creatures (sharks, whales, dolphins..)

I've only been to the beach a couple of times, and the mountains several hundred times. That said, I have to say that even if I could go to the beach more, if I had a choice, I'd pick the mountains any day. I like hiking a great deal, as much as I like swimming... and in the mountains you can easily do both, once you find a good stream or lake for it! And you get such a beautiful view up in the mountains, too, where you can look out over the surrounding area. It's one of my favorite things.

View from Jumonville Glen - This is the view from Dunbar Knob, also known as Jumonville.
I prefer the mountains/wilderness. I love seeing the view from a top of a mountain and hiking my way up it along trails or biking on a trail through the woods. It just makes me feel closer to God and gives me a chance to just smell the fresh air and listen to the birds chirping and possibly see wild animals.

I prefer the ocean. If I could afford ocean-front property I'd never move. I can sit and watch the waves for hours without being bored. I can lay in bed and listen to the waves crash until it lulls me to sleep. I can walk for miles on the beach without tiring when half that distance in the city would wear me out. The mountains are beautiful, but they don't move me the way the ocean does.
