i was reading up on being a surrogate mother and i was reading the criteras for being one and one of them was you can not be recieving welfare payments or public assitance. I was wondering why that is a critera. That does not make you a bad person. Does anyone know why that is a critera?

Hmm...that does seem kind of odd. Maybe they're thinking that a woman who needed public assistance would be so desperate for money that they'd be a surrogate for the wrong reasons and just pop out babies like a factory...but then at some point their income would exceed the maximim for assistance so that wouldn't make much sense. Or maybe they don't want the state paying the medical costs for a woman to produce income like that...but many times the prospective parents pay that bill so that doesn't fit either.
With all the "welfare to work" policies you'd think they wouldn't be so picky about where the income came from.

yes and just because your recieving public aid doesnt mean you dont have the heart to help someone else.

Exactly. It could be unfair stereotypes too...like welfare women not being as healthy or something stupid like that. Probably somewhere along the line someone did figure out how to abuse the system by being a surrogate and that ruined it for a lot of other women.

I too have been looking into it, and there are a couple of reasons that they do it.
If you are on public assistance and/or welfare, you could be using the pregnancy to get more money from the government (in many states your benefits increase if you are pregnant), and also they want people to be surrogates to enjoy the experience of helping others, not just so that they can make money. The money is supposed to be a plus, but not the only reason that you are doing it.

ok but like me..i am on public aid for healthcare for me and my husband and daughter and i recieve food stamps. I dont know if that would go up or not but even if it did it would be for making sure your getting the right nutrition for the child in your belly. and like the person above you said usually the other ppl take care of the medical expenses while you are pregnant.

Maybe they feel like you'd be doing it just for the money and not for the cause and that you wouldnt have the money to take the best care of yourself while you are pregnant.. i'm not sure.. this is just my best guess friend. . i see no other reason why. .
