My son and daughter brought home a bag full of books for the summer from their school. Apparently every year they give their students 10 books to read during the summer, the beginning of the new school year they will return them. What do you think of this? Good idea or bad. While I love the fact they are encouraging the kids to read I'm so afraid one of these books will be damaged.

That is a good idea. I know the school is prepared to see some books that are not in mint condition anymore. And I bet the teachers have already talked to them how to take care of those books. You just have to remind it to your child.
Summer reading is good for the kids. This would enhance her vocabulary, deepen her comprehension of the text, and engage her in a very meaningful activity for the summer.

Wow, that's a lot of books and I think your fear is well placed. I'd be afraid of them getting damaged but I'm sure the school thought of that. I hope so at least. I don't know though how fast children can read ten books in a summer. I know I can but that's because I'm addicted to books. Hopefully they love reading enough to finish them though.

They're probably prepared for the possibility of damaged books. I think it's a good idea that they are trying to get kids to read but I do think it's kind of a bad idea to send such a large amount because a lot of kids are not interested in reading over the summer, especially 10 books when they are used to enjoying their summer doing other things. I think 10 books is even a lot for me to read over one summer.
