Mosquitos

I've just got up early as I just couldn't sleep. All night I've been bugged by mosquitos buzzing around my head or biting my arms where they were sticking out of the covers. It's the first night this year that they've been a problem and I think I'll have to get the nets out before this evening. I hate the mosquito nets though. I always feel constrained by them, and I have to shut the bedroom doors to stop the cats from climbing them which makes it stuffy. How do you deal with mosquitos in your part of the world?

Hi GreenMoo, It seems that if there's less mosquitos, then there's more wasps. Those are my two most hated bugs. We are usually overpopulated with mosquitos every year and even though there are sprayers that come along and spray to try get rid of larva, it never seems like it works! I would've never thought a little insect such as a mosquito would be able to kill other animals with West Nile Virus or Lime's Disease but I guess that's God's intention? I usually where bug spray to get rid of mosquitos during the evenings when they are really bad. During the day there's not so many. When my hubby and I go fishing, we will use mosquito coils and let those burn even though the smell gives me a bad headache. I have to choose between getting eatin alive by those critters, or deal with a headache all night. Another thing we do is buy those citronella tourches and use three. My hubby nails them to the deck outside and we let them burn in the evenings as well.

Thanks for the tip! I'll definitly use the fabric softeners forsure. It's been really cold here this year so we haven't seen any yet but when that time comes I'll definitly remember what you told me. We are having a time with woodticks though do you have any tips for those and how to keep them away? Thanks

We mow the lawn every weekend to keep the ticks and the mosquitos out, and just to make the yard look nice too. I can't believe how fast it grows back though

Ticks are also horrible things. I keep the dogs and cats medicated against them, but the only real way we use to stop them being brought in on their fur or ourselves is by keeping the grass cut short.

I haven't seen this one posted here yet so here goes: fabric softener sheets. Mosquitoes are attracted to our body scent. The fabric softener sheets mask our scent and the mosquitoes stay away. I've used this method outdoors and was never bothered by the nasty little insects. My mother did it first and told me about it. She raved about it being the best mosquito repellant she's found. All you have to do at night is put some fabric softener sheets around your bed, like under the pillow, between the mattress and boxspring (with most of it hanging out), anywhere you can think of that will be near you while you sleep. I've also heard that eating a lot of garlic helps, too. They don't like the smell of garlic. Most insects don't like it, so you wouldn't have much trouble with any other kinds, either, like flies, fleas and the like. Garlic is also good for keeping vampires away, I hear-tell. I'm sure it would keep your friends at a distance, too. It does tend to come through your skin, which is why the bugs stay away. I'd go with the fabric softener sheets. They smell much better than the garlic.

Hmmmm, fabric softner sheets. Now that's an idea I've not tried before, but I'm willing to give it a go. You'd think that any type of scent would work if it were just to mask our body scent though, and it obviously doesn't, so i wonder what it is in fabric softener sheets that works. I'd heard about garlic before, but although I use loads of it it has no effect. Thanks for the idea. I'll go put sheets on my shopping list!

I'm really glad you mentioned the bees thing, as our village is absolutely crawling with them. My neightbour is a beekeeper and makes the most wonderful honey. Not that I'd be worried my mosquitos in daytime of course, as you say, but it's as well to be warned!

I don't know exactly what makes them work, but they do. I've used them and so has my mother. We were never bothered by the nasty and sometimes dangerous bugs while using them. My mom would just tuck one in her belt. (She seemed to always wear a belt.) I like to rub them on exposed skin a little before sticking them in a pocket or something. Sure is safer than bug sprays like Off with the Deet and smells a lot better, too! One word of caution... if you use them when the sun is up (chances are mosquitoes are not that big of a problem at that time of day, anyway) be careful of bees! They tend to love the flowery scents we put on ourselves, such as perfume.

Mosquitos - they all should die die
Hi Greenmoo. Oh the lovely time of the year for those pesty little nasty bugs. They love me and try to drain every ounce of blood out of me by the end of summer. But I will say I dont have the same problem you have they only bug me if I go out side early in the morning or in the evening. I don't get bugged in the house by them. I don't know if you have access to garlic tablets or if you even like garlic. But if you take a garlic tablet/pill or eat garlic everyday you won't have to worry about it because they won't bug ya. Have I tried that no but some of the guys around here say they do it before they go on fishing or camping trips so they don't have to worry about them. I just you mosquito spray when i go cammping or fishing.

I think some people seem to be more attractive to mozzies than others, so that's obviously you and me! I'd heard about the garlic, but i eat loads of it and it doesn't seem to make a jot of difference. Maybe the idea is that you eat loads of the stuff, then breath on them & knock them out of the sky like a fire breathing dragon

Hi GreenMoo - how are you doing? Besides being bitten alive. I can't stand mosquitos! They love to suck my blood and I can never hide from them. I use lots of bug repellent. I have heard if you take certain B vitamins that it keeps the little buggers away. But I'm bad at taking vitamins, so I don't know if it really works.

I think some people are more tasty to mosquitos than otherss, and obviously you and are are delicious! I'd heard that garlic was supposed to work at keeping the mozzies away too, but I eat masses of the stuff and it doesn't seem to make any difference at all

I also hate mosquitoes and it's really annoying to hear them buzzing around near you. Let me give you some advice on how to get rid or reduce them to fly near you. What I do is I make sure the room/house is clean, Always. I don't let any stagnant water in my house. I drained them everytime and I make sure the dainage is flowing well. I also discovered that mosquitoes loves darkness so better make your room well lighted. Mosquitoes does not like the scent of eucalyptus so whenever possible I use eucalyptus oil to my aroma therapy. Also plating some citronella on your garden will flew away mosquitoes. Those are some tips I can think of now if I still remember some I'll let you know. Hope that I do help you. Goodluck!

Thanks Ayessa for all the tips. I try and make sure that there's no standing water around the house as of course that's where they breed, but they seem to come regardless. Horrid things!

Mosquitoes love my mother and stepfather, but, since they started taking odorless garlic, they haven't had many problems. If you don't like garlic enough to eat a lot of it, that might work for you. Bug zappers are also good at keeping them at bay.

As I've just said to someone else, I eat masses of garlic & it doesn't seem to make any difference. It's always hard to know though. Perhaps if I stopped eating it I would attract even more!

Why are there mosquitos in your room? Are you sleeping with the windows open??? If so, I'd close them:) I live in Texas and it is way to humid to sleep with the windows open so I don't have to worry about mosquitos indoors. But boy oh boy they are everywhere outside right now. We just managed a garage sale over the weekend and I'm bit everywhere. I must smell super sweet!!!
