If you witnessed a crime in progress would you report it?

I witnessed some teenage kids in the process of committing a burglary the other night and called the police. I felt it was the right thing to do plus I kind of knew the store owners who were being robbed.
I have been worried about retaliation because the burglars saw me watching them but I'm one of those people who believe that maxim "evil flourishes while good men (or women) do nothing." I don't think our neighborhood would be as bad as it is if more people stood up and said something.

Yes they did the right thing. If people avopid reporting the crime it continues as the criminals think it's an easy area or business to rob at a later date etc.
HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I think you did the right thing by calling the police. I don't know why kids have to be this way and think there going to get away w/ it. We had one here in our town and ya the robber got away but was found and arrested. Teaches them right. Noone deserves to be robbed it's wrong and shouldn't be tolerated. I hope they didn't still do the robbery after they saw you watching them and if they did I hope they got caught by the police.

Being a 911 dispatcher, I can tell you we wish more people would stand up and say something. You'd be surprised how many 911 calls we get for something, yet when it comes down to witnesses, no one saw anything. You can't live your life in fear of the "bad guy" If no one ever says anything, what kind of world would we be living in? Kudos to you for calling the police.

Thanks misheleen73. :)
You really are on the frontlines aren't you. I guess those experiences must get really frustrating.

you definitely did the right thing by reporting it. i would have too. if more people would report things like that then it would make criminals that want to do that to think twice. they would never know who's watching and some crime would at least drop.

fear is the weapon of cowards...why fall to their trap and let them get away with what they are doing?

My wife works in an area where there is intermittent gang activity etc. I have a few times called 911 from her work to report crimes. One was a walk by shooting. A kid ran past another and shot him in the foot of all places. I was smoking a cig outside watching this transpire. I ran and aclled then when the police came I gave them all the info I knew along with my name address and phone number. My wife was so worried about gang retal;iation. I laffed saying, it was a "walk by" shooting for heavens sake. Anyhow I have reported many in my lifetime and will do so again if I see one. If noone reports them then it goes unnoticed by the law until it's too late.

That takes a lot of courage, good for you!
Gang related stuff can be really scary to deal with but it needs to be done or they will take over.

Oh yes by all means i would report it..I think to be a good neighbor and citizen you should report any crimes that you see committed...If you think there might be retaliation, just be careful, and keep a watch out for sometime. You might even be able to check with the police and find out what happened to them since their arrest....

Of course we should fight against those crimes in our society. If good people do nothing, then there will flourished with crime everywhere. That will be terrific!

Yes, I think that part of the reason crime is getting so bad is because people are unwilling to say anything.
I heard that there was a girl murdered at a pool not far from here and even though there were several people there no one saw anything.

I definately would report it. I would want someone to report it if it was my business or house that was being broken into. I have had my car stolen before and it was a horrible experience, even though I did get it back. And I agree, if people are stealing and they get away with it, they will keep doing it. Then others will think it's okay too. Stand up and take your community back - let them know it won't be tolerated.

That's so brave of you. I just hope they won't do anything harsh if they did recognized you. I would do the same thing because I believe that any crime committed must be punished by the proper authorities.
In the Philippines, most people are scared to report crimes that they themselves have witnessed, simply because if the robbers saw them, they might haunt them and kill them and their families. I, for one was a robbed a few years back and I did go to the police. When I got to the station, the robbers were there laughing with some people. So, in short, they are in cahoots. I got scared and took off. But when I came around, I called my cousin who knows a higher authority and told what happened. She, in turn reported the mishap but did not give my personal details. The robbers were apprehended and jailed. As for the local authority, I don't have any idea what transpired. The robbers took my wallet so they have my identity. I was so scared for my life that I went on a long vacation and went back when I everything cooled down. Good thing they didn't come after me.

I would report it. I also agree with that maxim. If more people did stand up we would not have the high crime rates we do. I live in a small town and we have very little crime, mostly kids creating havoc. I think one of the reasons it is so low in smaller communities is because we watch out for one another. If I saw someone hanging around my neighbor's car or house I would call the police in a heartbeat.
A few years ago I came home from work and heard a kid screaming for his mom "mama, mama." I was walking around with my cellphone looking for this kid for quite a while when my neighbor pulled in. She laughed at me and told me to put my cellphone away, that it was her new bird. The bird heard me pull in and thought I was her so he was yelling for her. I am more cautious now about things, but I would still call.

I'm glad to hear that there are still people like you out there Vic and I'm glad to hear that you are still willing to keep at it in spit of your bird experience. :)

Agreed ;)
I didn't realize at the time that it was a burglary. I just knew those kids where up to something because they took of running the minute they saw me. Then a cop came to my door asking if I had seen anything the night before and I explained what I had seen and told him I had called the cops.

Thumbs up to you!! If more people would do what you didthere would be less crime. I worked for state corrections for over 10 yrs and I believe if more people were caught by people like you that those "would be" crimminals would think twice before committing crimes! Keep up the good work! I know I will!

Well yes, I think that's one good function of a community. To help each other, especially when something not right is happening.
I would do the same thing as you have done, I might even record them on video just to make sure that I have proofs that can help the authorities.
You did the best thing, that's what made you different from other people whose been in the same situation as you but did nothing..
