You have already received some very good information here, and I'll leave it to those who know to refer you to the proper places regarding treatment.
I do, however, wish to give you the link to an article I wrote on Helium regarding "labeling" of children by our educational systems when they are diagnosed with autism or similar disorders.

It is up to the parent from the time of diagnosis to make sure that their child doesn't fall into these circumstances.

Autism is a disorder that they usually diagnose around this age. It is a very challenging one if it is moderate. It takes lots of love and patients. There is no remedy my friend it is a live and learn type of thing. If I were your friend I would do all the research I could to help cope with the mental anguish that comes with it. Tell your friend to make sure that she applies for social security to help with the financial part. There are certain groups and special schools for children wtih autism. They should not try to do it all by themselves they will get worn and tired and eventually you get resentful. They may try to put her on some medications myself I would not want my child on meds for the rest of her life I would try to do something before I took that extreme reaction, have them seek alternate choices, because they do have alternate ones. I wish you luck!! Love that child like no other and be patient with all she does.

autism means they see the world differently
it depends on the severity of the autism as to how different tjheir view is.
much love and patients is needed to try and understand how they function.and accept that they process information differently to the way most do....it doesn't mean they are wrong just different.my son has asperges a mild form of autism..we found that breaking tasks to individual steps made things easier
also working out mechanisms to help him cope went a long way.just patients......
