it isnt an "illness".. quite simply its a self esteem problem. same as with anyone else that feels the need to belittle another to make themselves feel better or important. unfortunately in this case, its a parent that feels the need to do it to their own child to gain a false sense of superiority.

I can't think of any specific illness that would cause a mother to do that. I'm not a psychiatrist. Immaturity would probably have something to do with it. A lot of mothers don't understand that they need to grow up when they have a child and that the world isn't about her anymore, but her child.
I sincerely hope this didn't happen to you. If so, you have my deepest sympathies. It might be helpful for you to talk to a counselor or someone about it, if you can't get help for her.
