Do you need a sleep aid to help you get/stay asleep?

I'm just wondering how many out there are like me, who have trouble falling asleep, then staying asleep. Sometimes, I can fall asleep just fine, but I never sleep more than 5 hours at a time, and that's with a sleep aid. I take melatonin to help me sleep. I don't like artificial sleeping pills, so I take a natural one, melatonin. How about you?

My main problem with sleeping is that I am in constant pain with fibromyalgia and lupus. If I roll over certain ways in my sleep, eventually whatever side I'm on starts hurting more because of the pressure from the mattress. I have tried that memory foam mattress topper but my husband doesn't like it. Maybe I'll try a waterbed. Someone mentioned that and it's not something I've tried before. I know that pills are not the answer. Thanks for your response.

Fortunately for me, none is needed. There are times though, that because of thinking of work situations or money situations, it does take awhile. With that I usually sit up in the dark living room...think out a solution, then go on to bed! Now when my acid reflux acts up...different story; I sit up most of the nite! I have a prescription (somewhere around here) but haven't gottent it filled...MY BAD!

You really should get that Rx filled! Acid reflux is nothing to burp about (sorry... couldn't resist). It's most likely doing damage to your esophagus. I'm glad to say that's one thing I DON'T suffer from. Sorry you have it. I hear it's nasty.

Hi Marti I am not aloud to take anything because at times I struggle to breathe when I am asleep and it wakes me up, if they gave me something or if I would take something I would not wake up so they have told me to never take anything for sleeping I sleep on and of but I have to be honest since a new Mattress was bought for me I am sleeping much better and no more back ache either, well mine was 10 years old lol

I have trouble sleeping at night but I have never taken anything to help me fall asleep or stay asleep I have always heard that those pills can get addicting so I have just never taken them. I have taken Nyquil when I have a cold and it does help you sleep but that is about it.

Not sleepig well can do all kinds of nasties to your body and mind. It can make you feel grouchy, not eat right, be sleepy all day, raise your blood pressure and probably a host of other things I don't know about. I used to take prescription sleep medication, but did not like it so I now take melatonin. It is all natural, something our bodies make naturally but, in some of us, just not enough. An occasional melatonin pill will help to restore a natural sleep pattern. You don't have to take it every night, but you won't get addicted to it if you do. I got this straight from a doctor.

I used tp have trouble sleeping or falling asleep, especially at night time, and I cant swallow a pill,so instead I would sometimes take benadryl to help, but most of the time I would just stay up all night so that way when I did try to sleep I would be able to fall asleep, but now that I am with my fiance I dont have half as much trouble sleeping, since most of the time we sleep cuddled up together.

I don't usually need something to help me fall asleep or to stay asleep. Usually I have a fairly easy time doing this. However, there are nights, when I do have more difficult with this.

I do have trouble with falling asleep and have to wait till I am really really tired before I can fall asleep, but I dont wake up in a few hours or so. If I am able to fall asleep will I wake up in the next morning and maybe oversleep sometimes. I have tried sleeping pills and it works, but I cannot sleep long with it and will wake up n 3-4 hours or so and I dont want to depend on pills either...
