I just got a message telling me that my virtual memory is too low. What causes this problem and what's the best thing to do to solve it?

for running normal applications 256mb is more than enough. with 256mb ram you will be having around 384MB of virtual memory. so your total memory will be 384(1.5 times your ram) + 256(your ram). that makes 640 MB of memory. This will be enough for your daily applications unless you have a highly memory consuming application running. If you are having only normal applications running and you are getting the message, Then it might be any one of the below problems 1. Your computer will be affected by virus. 2. You are running unnecessary services . try to stop unnecessary services running from run-msconfig 3. You will be having a highly demanding(memory consuming) anti-virus like NORTON running. 4. your page file will be set to zero or a lower value. I think 256 MB of PHISICAL RAM is enough for normal applications. HAPPY COMPUTING

Hmm...this makes sense. I have 512mb of RAM. I intend to get another 512mb, but I'll see if your suggestions would help. I do have a lot of programs in my PC. Thank you very much! ;-)

oh 512 mb ram and still low virtual memory!! 512 MB ram should not ever show a low virtual memory unless you play a demanding pc GAME.

I got the same message several times while playing games on my laptop. Either you should increase your RAM or else try using Ccleaner. It is a temporary solution as it deletes all temporary internet files and recent viewed files list. This may help in increasing your Virtual memory. Download this software from download.com

you need more ram for games. But for normal running applications less ram is required.

I do have Ccleaner. It's a good program, but I think I need more than this to solve the problem. Thanks! ;-)

It is caused by opening more applications than your memory can handle. It can also be caused by running new programs... hungry for memory... on old computers with little memory. Before installing new programs... you should check their system requirements. If your computer does not meet those system requirements... you should not install the program. To recover your memory... close all programs. And if that does not do the trick... reboot the computer. You might have a program which requires most of your memory. In that case... when you are using that program... you should not open any other application. Adding memory to your computer made a big difference in the old days... like 10 or 15 years ago. But these days... the programs we are using not only require lots of memory... but also video cards with lots of memory and fast CPU. The very minimum requirement today is a 2Ghz Pentium 4 with 512Mb Ram and 32Mb video card. And that would be a 6 year old computer.

Thanks for the very concise and informative response. I have a five-year-old computer, but I do have the minimum requirements. I think I should upgrade. I am going to get more RAM. I've installed a lot of programs in this PC. It's really time to upgrade. ;-)

That is a good point Plooker. However... I don't think that virtual memory is limitless. Because if it was... there would be no need in buying more RAM. As a guess... I would say that your virtual memory is relative to your RAM memory. The more RAM... the more virtual memory.

Virtual memory is hard disk space that is being converted to aid the physical RAM. Low on virtual memory means that hard disk space is insufficient, so that Windows can't create the necessary virtual memory. Each byte of hard disk space equals to each byte of virtual memory. There are 3 ways to solve this: 1. Purchase more RAM. Ideally, PCs should have 2 GB of RAM. It's not expensive nowadays to install 2 GB of RAM. This option requires you to spend some money. 2. Purchase larger hard disk. It's more expensive than installing 2 GB of RAM, but you will certainly have more space to convert into virtual memory. 3. Uninstall unnecessary applications, delete unnecessary files and back up rarely used files to DVDs. This is the only option that doesn't require you to spend any money, because this options doesn't involve purchase of anything. Good luck.

I also received a warning like that when I was using a Windows PC. Try closing other programs that seems like eating too much of your virtual memory. Another thingyou can do is to increase the page file of your PC. You can search the Internet on how to do it or using the Help and Support of Windows. :)

If you receive this message sometime then it because of some of your running software require a lot of memories. You can fix this problem by just close some program that you do not use in that time. See these links for more information. http://www.computerstuffs.co.uk/osprobs/windows/virtualmem_low.html http://www.answers.vt.edu/ask4help/desktop/vtkb1550.htm
