I think it depends on the individual household and what works best for them. It works well in my house for both my husband and I to work. We are able to arrange our schedules to accomodate the children, work and out other responsibilities. Economically it's getting to the point that most families need both parents to work.

both my parents worked when I was younger, my mum did use to do shift work so she had mornings or afternoons free. I dont think it's that hard for both parents to be working :)

If a family has children and If a husband can earn enough to let the wife stay at home that is fine but it works the same if the wife can support the family then he can stay home and noone should think bad of him for letting her support the family. This works well for a lot of families today.

Depends on your house income. If you think your husband income can support you and your children, then only husband should work. If not enough, both should work.By the way, husband and wife should help each other.

Both, even after having kids! The first months here in Portugal they have the right to stay at home with their kids, but after that they have to work to pay this new extra costs!

I think no one should sit idle at home, so both husband and wife should work. Its good for both.

It depends on whether the family can live on one salary. Many people now find that it takes at least 2 salaries to stay afloat.

I don;t think there are any 'shoulds' in regards to this question. It's up to the individuals to decide. Me and my boyfriend couldn't survive on one income so we both work. We're also not planning on having any kids anytime soon, even if we did we would probably both still work once they were a little older

If you have children, or intend to have them soon into the marriage/relationship then only one parent should work, usually it's the dad and I think that's usually best but if they choose to do it the other way around, that's ok too. But if you don't have children and don't plan on having them soon then I think both husband and wife should work if they choose to. I guess if they make an arrangelment between them and can afford for only one to work, that's up to them but personally, I would work as well as my partner if we didn't have children.
