How high will gas get before people quit driving so much?

It seems that even at almost $4 a gallon, people are still doing a lot of unnecessary driving.

Over here gas prices are about double those of the USA. Currently I pay £4.48 a gallon, that's $8.96, and my gas is far from the most expensive. But there are still millions of journeys made each day, congestion is as bad as ever. Seems to me that people will always find the money for gas and something else will suffer. Eventually of course, it will have to peak, or gas will become such a scarce commodity that only the very wealthy and the emergency services/hauliers will be able to access it. Think that I shall buy a horse and cart. LOL.

According to the economists and the environmentalists here, that wouldn't be a good idea either. The horse is going to need to be fed grain - that takes away from the amount of grain available for food consumption for humans, and the horse manure is going to emit methane gas and contribute to global warming!

When I was in Europe last month, I enjoy walking everywhere. I wish I can walk in USA. I told my friends in Europe that distances in USA are different and we have to drive double or triple what people have to drive in Europe.

I am limiting my shopping and my driving. I rather order online when special offer with free delivery. I have to have social life, but I can share driving with other people. I ask myself if I need to go places before I start driving. I always think about people driving minivans and huge trucks. I have no idea how they can handle new gasoline prices.

My minivan gets almost 26 miles to the gallon. It is those suburbans and Navigators and similar vehicles that I wonder about -- how can anyone justify driving those things?

The fuel price is going high and high.We are using petrol or Diesel more than Gas. I think the price hike of gas will not affect the driving.Because if people have enough money then they will not change their mind.I think the planning can reduce some kilometers of our driving. Thanks

Yes, we probably are spoiled. Until recent years, gas prices didn't get too high, but they have doubled in the past year. That, along with increased food prices is really making a big dent in American's budgets.

I don't know about everyone else but my family has cut down on all unnecessary driving. The problem for many people, myself included, is that there is no such thing as public transportation here and carpooling is impossible so I'm forced to drive.

That does create a problem. There are so many companies that won't let you telecommute - my previous employer was that way. I couldn't even convince them that I could work for less pay if I didn't have to leave home.

What I wonder is if we keeping agreeing to pay these outrageous prices won't the gas companies just keep raising the prices. I mean if everyone acts like it is nothing to put $100 worth of gas in their car at each fill up why should the prices go down. Someone has got to stop this madness. My family has really cut down on how many times we go to town each week. My husband has to go to work so we can't avoid that but he is going to start driving my sons truck some because it gets a little better gas mileage. Gas prices here in North MS are Reg $3.75 and diesel $4.63.

I have to agree - you would think if we all bought less that they'd decide to bring the price down, but since the gas companies are making record profits, I guess they don't care!

I don't use the car anymore because I will spend less if I just ride a jeep or bus.Besides, I will not have to pay for parking

Although I don't do unnecessary driving such as drag racing and just driving around to look at places, I'm actually guilty of wasting gas when I drive alone (which is all the time). I know it will be more cost-efficient to hitch a ride or carpool, but it's a little bit of a hassle to find people who do the same things as I do. Anyway, gas prices have really started to put a dent in my budget so I'll probably need to make sacrifices soon.
