Do you give your scraps to stray cats?

Assuming you have any left over food from dinner, would you rather throw it in the trash or feed it to stray animals that hang out in the neighborhood. I know that feeding animals often encourages them to hang around. But, would putting the food in the trash be a waste. Then noone would benefit. We have an outdoor female cat that lives at our house and she gets our scraps. She's not really a stray. She's the mom to one of our cats. So, I guess that means she's part of the family. What do you think? Toss the scraps, so that you don't encourage the pet population? Or, have mercy on an animal, so he doesn't dig through your trash can in the middle of the night? What's your thoughts on the matter?

my neighbor's cat would love to visit and ask for leftover food. the thing is, the owner stays somewhere else, so the cats will not eat. :( i ask my dog's nanny to take care of the cats too.

We don't throw any food in the trash and haven't for years. We always dump our food outside. Growing up we had a lot of cats so any time we had scraps or what not we'd just feed our own cats. We had other cats and animals show up, but they would have for the other cat food anyway. We still dump our food out. We ended up jumping up our cat population somehow and it wasn't intended so now we have a better reason to dump our food out.

Just give it to cats or dogs in the neighborhood. I have an office mate who also love cats and she feed them everyday. I told her to feed the cats away from the office so they wont stay and roam around. But she insist on feeding them. I hate seeing cats. I dont like the smell of their urine and popooh. There are lots of stray cats here in our place.

I think if you are already feeding her it would be cruel to stop. She is an animal and wouldn't understand and would probably get very, very hungry before she realized you weren't going to feed her anymore. I live on an old sugar mill, so it is sort of rural here. Over the past year we've taken in 3 stray dogs. The cats are drawn here because of the mice in the sugar cane fields, so they don't usually come looking to us to feed them. Our biggest concern is for them to overpopulate. An animal rescue organization came in a couple of weeks ago and set traps to catch the cats. Then a couple of local vets spayed and neutered the cats and they were returned to the sugar cane mill. You may check for local organizations in your area that are part of the feral cat spay and neuter program. I think it is interesting to note that none of the cats caught here were undernourished. One tomcat weighed in at 22 pounds. I do set out snacks for the raccoons, it keeps them from digging in the garbage.

I have a friend who works at a job that is near woods and he says that they get raccoons all the time coming up to the place. He throws them food. Now ordinarily I wouldn't even think to feed a wild animal. But, he said that some other guy refused them food and they got mad. So, I think it could be a wise move to feed an animal so he doesn't have to be desperate. And, you're right. I'd never stop feeding the cat that has chosen to adopt our family. She sticks around and could go elsewhere. But, she doesn't. We used to have another cat outside that did the same. Her name was Domino. She passed at Christmas. I was so sad. We fed her daily. I will never forget that cat.

We put compost out, and also sometimes we have meats, gravies, etc. We do put them out, but we know that wild animals benefit from them as much as stray domestic animals do. Our own pets really are not very interested in people food.

You make a good point about wild animals. Often areas of the country have animals other than cats and dogs. I've heard some people get deer in their yards. I wonder if they eat veggies that have been put out? I suppose that might save someone's garden. Hopefully, anyway.

There are no stray cats that live in this area (I live on a dangerous street in the middle of a city), but I have a cat who stays in the house, and often likes to eat my scraps so I will give them to him.

That's really a hard call. When I lived at home, my mom rarely bought canned food for our cats and fed them scraps. Of course, nothing was randomly given out. For example, tiny bones were removed before meat was given to the cats. The same precautions were taken in feeding stray cats. But it also encouraged more strays to appear and breed like crazy. We soon had a lot of cats and kittens, not a very good situation. For my part, I wouldn't feed scraps to strays. Who knows how long that the food would lay there uneaten and what kinds of bugs might be feasting on it in the meantime? Also, a lot of times, I don't have any scraps to give. I'd rather open a cheap can of cat food and put it out for the strays. And I don't randomly place the food out there. I'll only put it out when I see a stray cat.

I feed all the strays around here..I have possums that come up at night, and i put left over food out for them, the next morning it is gone....I also have a poor skinney little cat that is a stray, his little bones are showing,i feel so sorry for that cat,so yes i put cat food out for him along with my own cat...I always feed the strays...everything that we do not eat goes out for the strays, they always know there is food and they always eat...I never throw scraps in the garbage,it goes to the strays...Since i have been leaving food out for that stray cat,its got in the habit of coming to eat.I cannot stand for any thing animal or human to go hungry..

Well, not as of now. But the house that we used to live in, my husband would put food outside for the cats to eat off of.. I had kind of liked this, because, I felt like the left over food was not going to waste...

I never have because they are none here . My gram used to and there was no harm there because they cat kinda just came around more . That is a good thing because the cat finally became indoors . I supopose it is bad if they are true wild cats .
