Take a pill, take a roller coaster ride. I'm with Proudmammabear on this one. That's a lot of weight to gain in a short period of time. Even if your appetite increased within that period of time, you need to know why. This can be a sign of a greater problem. Your doctor should advise you on this one. Do not procrastinate.
If it turns out that you just went a little crazy and went overboard, then exercise (I began walking) and a lifestyle change (notice I do not call it a diet)did it for me. The lifestyle change includes giving up the harmful white stuff in your diet - white sugar, white bread, white rice, white pasta, white potatoes. It means eating lots of FRESH fruits and vegetables. It means giving up fried foods and switching to baked, braised, sauteed, boiled or broiled. It means giving up dried fruits and salty greasy nuts. It means no more chips. It means reading labels so I don't lie to myself about the sugar or fat content in the food I eat.
After the weight is lost and I feel good about my accomplishment, then I can treat myself to an ice cream or a slice of cake or whatever else I want. I have that treat knowing that I can have it anytime I want - just not all at once and not every day.
This may seem strict, but I never measured anything and I never counted calories. I simply stuck to the menu. I dropped 70 lbs in about 8 months.
For me, sugar was an addiction. I craved it. I could imagine some of the best desserts and make them happen. My hands and feet were swollen most of the time and I controlled my blood pressure with pills. When I lost weight, I went out to eat to celebrate. How smart is that?
I would suggest, tho, step one is get yourself checked. If eveything is OK, then you can figre out the best approach to taking the pounds off. I would beg you to reconsider taking any pills. 40 pounds is not a lot of weight. You can do it!!

Ionamin (Phentermine Resin) has never failed me. Unfortunely, I think it's been banned.
Alternatives would be Reductil, Xando and Xenical

40 lbs is alot of weight to gain so quickly. Before trying diet pills or dieting, I'd suggest you go to your doctor to get some blood work done - in particular to check your thyroid. There may be a physical reason behind the weight gain, not just what you're eating.
If you get the A-okay from your doctor everything is fine, I'd suggest changing your eating habits (like more fruit, vegatables and salads) and just don't buy the cakes, cookies and potato chips. I've found if I don't have the cookies to eat, I'll eat the healthy stuff I do have. I've gotten to where I don't even miss having cookies around anymore.

I take diet pills. They were prescribed by my doc. I go back to see her every month so she can moniter me closely. Diet pills are not bad if you don't abuse them. Depends on the person if they work. I personally believe that if a diet pill is being marketed by walmart, it doesn't work.
Talk to your doc.

Diet pills can be dangerous. The best thing to do, in my opinion, is to see your doctor about it.
Is there a specific way you put on the weight? Medications? Eating? Illness? There are different ways to go about losing weight depending on the reason you've put on the weight.
One thing that is good no matter what the reason for the weight gain is diet and exercise.
Other than that, you'll have to be more specific for an accurate response. Seeing a doctor about it is the best thing you could do.

I would be going to a doctor rather than the shelves of a pharmacy for a cure or a fix for the problem. 40 pounds over the last few months is A LOT of weight to be put on so quickly and can be the signal from your body that there is a bigger problem. A problem that perhaps diet pills could even make worse. Especially if your eating habits or activity level haven't changed all that much in the last few months. I would be worried for your health. Diet pills are a quick fix that only give temporary immediate gratification at best, at worst, have no result, leading to forms of depression etc.
I feel your pain, I am a big girl myself!
