Which machine should I buy?

I love sewing, particularly creating outfits for fancy dress and customising clothes. I've recently started a new job and will now be able to start indulging in my hobbies and interests a bit more so have started looking at different sewing machines; but I'm completely lost! Which machines are the best? Which should I avoid? What was your first sewing machine?
I'd need something that is fairly small to store as space is very limited where I am living and one that is quite simple to use but would save me having to hand stitch everything! Any help would be appreciated!:)

i also love to sew and i love to creat out my own dresses and outfits i like being able to taper the clothes to my exact body style since i have long legs and a short torso/midsection i personally do not own a sewing machine because they are too expensive but i want to eventually buy one i have heard that the brother sewing machine is a very good brand to use (despite the discussions on mylot about a few people having trouble with them) the one thing to remember about buying sewing machines is that you definintely get what you pay for

I also sew and i cannot tell you which ones are bad but in my opinion ,i like the "Singer" sewing machine.I have had 3 of them and they have always been great...Its one of the oldest brands that has been around since the old days and it is a great machine...
