For those of you who have seen Ironman, do you think it's appropriate for a 9 year old to see? I know it's PG-13 but I'm told it's mainly for the special effects?

Yes I think its fine, they may get a little bored in some of the scenes like the other writer said. I took my 10 year old girl and 8 year old son to it..They enjoyed it but really went ballistic over Indiana Jones, they really enjoyed that movie. Plus its good to censure what your children watch but don't over do it, I take the stance that ignorance is not always bliss. You would be amazed at what the kids know in elementary school. I talk to mine all the time about life.

We took my son and it was fine. He was bored in some of the sections though. The movie starts out fast then slows down a lot (I almost fell asleep) and then waaayyy at the end gets moving again. Just be prepared for that. If he isn't a HUGE comic book person and really into story development, the odds are he is going to want at least one bathroom break.
Honestly, I find a lot of PG movies are more age inappropriate than PG-13.
