Yes, it might be so in some cases. Or maybe we just need more oxygen..? ..

it is social since it is highly contagious. environmental because there are a couple of factors that will make you sleepy and yawning is something that will keep you awake. also, lack of oxygen. yawning makes us catch that needed oxygen in the body.

actually i did start yawning lol :)
the carbon-di-oxide that other peson releases gets spread
however the major cause of the yawn being contagious is due to the presence of mirror neurons in our body
the mirror neurons are mainly concerned with imitations which upon being exposed to stimulus from same species and interspecific organisms activates the same parts in the human brain :)
when these mirror neurons are exposed to the yawning stimulus from another human , then , the other human also being from the same race of species , get activated and as they are related to imitations , they activate the same parts in the brain as in the other human also :)
also , yawning happens when there is lack of oxygen in the human body this can be cured or stopped by having some water when you yawn that makes sure that the oxygen content in your blood in the body gets replenished :)
similarly , when you look at such smilies , there neurons get triggered and give a sensation of sleep ant tiredness in your body due to which you tend to yawn or fall asleep :)

Thanks for this explanation, at least we have some science behind this phenomenon .... I wonder if a person who is smiling has the same effect on others. In that case.. lets keep on smiling ..

Well, I know there are days at work the minute someone starts yawning, everyone else seems to start yawning, and it continues to go around the room all day. When you answer phones that is not fun if you are yawning all day.
And look what you made my smilie do thinking about all the yawning... LOL

Yeah... especially since i came past this topic early in the morning...lol
I read a news article that reported that people with more psychic powers (as in who think more on things around them)are more prone to contagious yawning than others.
This experiement was conducted with 10 engineering students and 10 students studying pschology. The pschology students yawned more frequently when they were bored and saw someone else yawn.
Just thinking of yawning makes me yawn.lol. Yawn is a weird word that really seems to yawn...

Interesting study. And yes, some words actually sound like the thing they describe, purring and meowing are a couple more examples..I think any cat would agree..
