ok i am very seriously considering getting DSL instead of my tired dial-up! but i dont know if my computer has what is needed to be able to work with the DSL modem and i cant find any place online that will tell me!
i have an older computer..an HP XE783 here is a link to a page with the complete specs if it helps.
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?docname=bph06558&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN#N1023
now does the DSL modem just use the same telephone line port that im using now? there is a second little phone like jack next to my modems, but it looks the same size and i thought it was supposed to be bigger.
the only thing ive changed on this computer is the RAM so everything else is like the specs page link above..
someone please tell me if i can upgrade or do i need to buy something special for the DSL modem to work?

DSL is one hundred times better then dial up,and all I really think you need to get DSL is an ethernet port, which if your computer has one it will be a little bigger than the phone line jack, and then you will have to buy a ethernet cord, and you can get one of those from places like Radio Shack.

You would be needing a LAN or Ethernet 10/100 PCI card for your DSL modem, I have never seen that in your specs page. This will be inserted in your motherboard in one of the PCI slot. DSL modem has a different cable and plug than your dialup modem. Your dialup connection can be your alternate internet connection so if you can leave it as is.

so i need one of these things right?!
Desktop 10/100 PCI Network Card
* Connect a desktop computer to a home or small office network
* Auto negotiation for 10Base-T/100Base-TX provides speeds up to 200 Mbps in full-duplex mode
* Optional Wake-on-LAN advanced networking capability (cable included); boot ROM capability
dont know what that last part is about..but i need that card so the DSL modem as something to plug into on my computer...right?

If You'll get DSL modem with router that would be fine, so that way You can connects more than 1 PC to internet.. :)
Anyway cable what was telephone line will be DSL line so that line goes:
if You have DSL router
to DSL router
DSL router has connection for telephone , LAN, USB and of course DSL line
And newer Router has wirelles network inside...
If its case only with DSL Modem.. Than DSL line first goes to a splitter (it's an small box to split telephone line from DSL line)
So splitter Has one connector for Telephone and another one for DSL Modem..
DSL Modem can have one or two connections to a PC, LAN and USB so thats all...
