Ever given up your favourite food for health reasons?

Whether it's for a sudden allergy, or diabetes or just because you know it's really not healthy to eat it, is there a food that you love but no longer eat because you can't? Is it a self imposed ban, or doctors orders? Is there ever an occasion where you think 'stuff it', and eat it anyway, only to suffer later? Any substitutes that you have made, or you just go without completely?

Egg is number one. I suffered from severe allergy lately thats why eating egg which I really love to is a big NO NO now. Next are beef, chicken, canned goods and junk foods. I got minor problem with my liver thats why I am not allowed to eat those. At first I really tried to avoid them but later on I started again to eat them though sometimes only. I hope everything will be fine with my health so I could eat again anything that I want to eat.

You have a lot of food that I love which you can't eat. It must be so difficult not to eat them, though with a severe allergy to them, that must make it easier, knowing the result if you do. I wish you well with your health, and hopefully you get back to eating the foods you love.

hello muscare, what a sad topic LOL!!! i love any form of soda drinks, i used to drink them like crazy before about 15 years ago (yeah that long!) BUT i have to stop since then coz i have an ulcer and half glass of it will make me really really sick. i will throw up and will suffer greatly on my tummy so i realized it is not worth it coz i am not good on handling pain. my husband knows that so he will say NO to me big time when i asked for a sip of it coz even a sip will give me a tummy pain. sometimes i crave for it so bad so i will just weigh out if i am ready for the pain or not. i think i will give my self a sip at least once a year but not more than 3. my hubby will sip one and will just kiss me so i can have the smell and a bit of what it taste like TORTURE ei? i dont have any substitute for that really coz most of the drinks i have cannot give me the same happiness i used to get in soda... such a sad thing in my part. oh well! takecare!

Hi jairgirl, it is sad seeing all the food and drink people have to go without. 15 years ago? But jairgirl, you don't look a day over 21. Were you drinking soda at six? Sorry, being serious again, an ulcer with the accompanying pain is a very good reason to give something up, and I know how hard that can be. When I was in my teens, I used to be addicted to coca cola, and the excess caffeine made things kind of tougher. I eventually cut back, but I can still drink it with no health problems. At least your hubby looks out for you, even if he does a little teasing. LOL, that's actually the sort of thing I do with my wife, so I can appreciate it!

27, I would never have guessed....oh ok, I saw it on your profile, guess you caught me in a complimentary mood, LOL! Seeing a friend die must've been very hard for you, but at least you decided to take better care of yourself, even if you do need reminders from your hubby. By the way, jairgirl, you don't have to be jealous of me drinking coke, because the next time I have one, I'm going to have an extra long, cold one, just for you. Yumm, can you feel that cold, delicious cola going......are you licking your lips? Sorry, LOL, I'm out of here before you try to hit me!

i have abstained from my favourite food for a while. that was after i found out my cholesterol level was higher than normal. it's fried pork lard, which is basically the little bits of crunchy pork fats that you get after frying the fats. i love it so much that i usually ask for extra. however, i stopped eating that totally for four long months. that was really miserable especially when i see others eating it. once my cholesterol level went back to normal, i started eating that again. however, i dare not over-indulge like i used to.

Yes, definitely better if you can't smell your favourite food. Squid is high in cholesterol? I love squid, but I didn't know that. Then again, maybe I did, but somehow it conveniently slipped my mind, LOL!

28 May 08
yes it's totally cruel and absolutely torturing. Thankfully it didn't happen to me frequently. Also those eating it is usually sitting at the next table. Distance does make a difference coz at least I can't really smell it. My cholesterol is now back in the normal range, though still on the high side of normal. I refrain from squid coz I don't really like it that much and the cholesterol level is terribly high. Good luck to both of us on our quest to healthy cholesterol levels. Cheers.

hahaha i bet it just slipped your mind. some days i'd just ignore the cholesterol content and go for my favourite food too. a lot of food is high in cholesterol. so moderation is very important. in fact, moderation is the key to healthy lifestyle. regardless of how good a food is, it will be bad if you consume in copious amount. food that contains high cholesterol level includes most seafood. it's especially worst for prawn heads and crab roe.

There was a time when my dermatologist advised me not too eat certain foods because of my allergies. That time, I was told not to eat a lot of good food. I was told not to eat anything that has preservatives and that include hotdogs, bacon, ham and others. When it comes to fish, there are specific types of fish that I can't eat. Most seafoods are also not allowed. I can't eat chicken and I can't eat eggs. I can't eat anything with tomato sauce because most of the tomato sauce that are available in the market have preservatives. Well, that was years ago. Now, I can eat them!

That must've been a horrid time, not being able to eat some of the tastiest foods around. It must've taken you a heap of will power to avoid them, and I bet it was like a dream when you could finally eat what you wanted too.

I have not had to but, it it weren't for natural herbal remedies, I would have had to give up almost everything with any kind of flavor. The reason is Acid Reflux. I was diagnosed with it and, I know that the triggers are darn near anything. Anything red, spicey, warm, acidic at all, sugary...pretty much everything nice about life and food. I was prescribed Prilosec and gained weight on it and, it isn't good for your body because it wipes out all of the acid in your stomach which, you need. So, I got off of the prilosec and started taking herbal enzymes and other intestinal soothe and builders that help to keep the acid in my stomach balanced. And, I can eat whatever I want to. Granted, I still have to watch what I eat as my weight and my metabolism never quite got back on track. But, I don't suffer as long as I keep an eye out for the signs and take the herbal remedies.

Acid reflux is bad enough when it comes from over-indulging in the wrong sort of food. I'd hate to have it full time, being brought on by practically everything I eat. Your life must've been really hard, and disheartening when you were on medication with a weight gain side effect. I'm glad you found herbal remedies that work for you, and you no longer need to suffer.

It most definitely was disheartening and horrible. But, it is amazing what herbal remedies can do. I use them for everything from boosting my immune system and keeping me from catching the same colds that everyone else has, to strengthening my hair so it will quit falling out...that is a new one I am trying! I hope it works! But, once I found the stuff I could take, that is all natural and doesn't do any damage to my body, and it controls my acid reflux...I was thrilled!

No. Not Yet. Well, not exactly due to an allergy or a health problem, but due to an injury, I was restricted to eat food. Any kind. I just had to live on liquids. I'm not allergic to any food. At that point of time, I had accidentally drank some acid and had led to a burn of the tongue. So I couldn't eat anything and I had to live on fluids only. Thats the only time I had to love without the food I loved. The thing is my parents had just returned from my grand parents place and they had got some of the local sweets. I had told them to get me more so that I can savor it for a longer time, but alas I had to wait for a full 15 day for the burn to get better and then ate them.. Even then I couldn't taste cops the taste buds would take another 15 days to get back again.. bourne

That sounds very nasty. How old were you when this happened? Must've been hell, not being able to eat anything, just drinking, and it must've been very painful. Even not getting your tastebuds back for a while would've been bad too, eating and not tasting. Bet you made up for it when you finally could taste.

If I have to give up my favourite food for health reasons, I guess I will give up but not completely. I believe one can still occasionally have a bite of what is forbidden as long as it is eaten in moderation.

Yes we all have to give up our favourite food sometimes or the other due to various reasons like allergies, diabeties etc. Sometimes it is better to impose a self imposed ban on certain food then face pain, difficulties and illness.

yes oh yes potato chips and ice cream because I am a diabetic and candy of all kinds, I can eat lays baked chips and sugar free ice cream in small amounts. sometimes I just say to heck and have some real ice cream in a small 'amount and its okay. sugar free chocolates are fine if you do not eat too many otherwise you get the trots from it.

Yes. :( I used to eat two cans of tuna a day. I love it, and it was great at keeping my weight down. After about two years of eating it daily, I started having an allergic reaction to it. I kept eating it and ended up in anaphylaxis. I stopped eating it, but I break down and have a taste every now and again. I'm much better about not eating it, since I had to be hospitalized, but the urge is still there. I think, however, that I'm officially over eating it, because I've found canned mackerel to be an excellent substitue. If I hadn't have found mackerel, I'd probably have to deal with an annual hospital visit. Losing your favorite food is one of the most miserable things in the world, especially if it's a regularly eaten thing.

You really do love tuna, two cans daily. I hope the same thing doesn't happen with the mackerel, what'll do then? So much for saying fish is good for you. I'm sure the craving is still there, but as you say, the outcome of eating tuna has got to be a real incentive not to, and at least you have found a substitute. Now I'll think of you everytime I eat tuna, LOL!

I would not say that they were my favourite food, but I liked them very much: cow brains. I can't eat them anymore, for health reasons, but it wasn't my doctor who forbid me to eat them any more (even when they are "pure cholesterol"). It was the government who forbid slaughterhouses to sell them to butchers. Even when in my country it's nearly imposible the outbreak of mad-cow disease, because cattle is grass bred in prairies, this prohibition was "politically correct" in order to export uruguayan beef at better prices. OK. It's a good reason. Nevertheless, I'm thinking about visiting any relative's ranch where there is no control of animal's slaughter to eat mutton brains just once more.

I have to agree that cow brains are not my favourite either, LOL! When I was born, doctors were recommending that babies being weaned should be fed lambs brains. I bet opinions nowadays are quite a bit different. I guess if government steps in and bans products, it's hard to do anything about it. I don't like brains, but I used to love tongues, but these are no longer sold in butcher shops here. I wish you luck in your quest to eat brains just once more!

Yeah, I try to limit all kinds of salty snacks, since I developed high blood pressure a few years ago. I've brought my BP down by limited those foods, but I ned to try to stay away from them to keep it down. I've also been trying to cut down on sweets; I have a real sweet tooth and sometimes go overboard when eating them. Once I started munching on them, it's hard for me to stop.

Tomato sauce, the high concentration of acid bothers my stomach lining and makes for gastric reflux. Also sets off the Rosacea (redness/burning in my face). Once in awhile, I eat it anyway, but I generally suffer for it. Usually a cheese sauce or a garlic sauce or both is what I use instead. Interesting topic, take care.

I only use tomato sauce on a certain number of foods, but if I couldn't have it, I'd just about have to give those foods away. They just wouldn't be the same without. At least you've found a substitue so you can keep eating your foods.

Not many times I guess. As far as I remember once doctor ordered me not to eat any food from outside since I was just picking myself up from bed. I was being hospitalized that time and just the day after I got discharged friend's birthday party was there. I'm not sure what fryers are. Are they some sort of food which has been deep fried? I know there are so many 'expert' opinions on whether foods are healthy or not, it's sometimes hard to know who to believe. I'm just starting to lean towards a healthier diet, just because I'm now more health conscious.
