Do You Keep?

Do you keep a flashlight or lantern close by while in your house during stormy weather? We have so many storms during the spring and summer months that I feel safer keeping a flashlight and lantern near by in case the power goes out, especially at night. I also have a battery operated television so I can get the local news and weather.

We used to keep flashlights and candles ready when we lived on the reservation, because you never knew when the power would go out. One time I was coming home from a meeting and it was late. I was mad at my husband because he didn't leave the outside light on for me. When I asked him about it, he asked me if I noticed that there were no lights on at all anywhere around because the power was out. I didn't even notice! How silly is that. We moved almost three years ago back to the city and only once did the power go out and I was so shocked. Especially since it used to happen to us all the time and I had forgotten about it. It's a rare occassion for us now, that we are not prepared for when it does happen. I would definately keep one if I was in a place where the power went out all the time.

I also accused my husband once of not turning on the outside lights when in fact the power was out.
I have a small lantern, flashlight and also keep candles handy. We get some pretty severe storms in Missouri and we need to be ready. Thanks for responding.

Really, my husband has family that lives there, mainly in Rolla. Been there twice now for family reunions that they have every five years. Next one is only two years away, but I'm not sure where it will be next time.

Nope. All flashlights, including my backpacking mantle lantern, are kept in the utility room on the shelf right next to the door so we know where they are at when the power goes out.

I have a small flashlight near the bed but we do have larger ones close by. I also have candles around the house but no lanterns. Might have a lantern out in the garage but not sure, my son takes one with him sometimes when he fishes at night but we don't normally have that many storms that knock out the power.

I have a small lantern I bought several years ago that is battery operated. It's great. I also have candles but won't burn them unless they are up high because of the cat. She's a bit too curious. We just had a severe weather warning in our area. Funnel cloud was sighted but diminished.....whew! THis one was close. We do have more storm warnings and if it goes into the nighttime hours and we do lose our power, I am ready. Thanks for rsponding.

I forgot about battery operated lanterns. We used to have some of those when we used to go camping a lot. Not sure if we still have one of those or not but my guess it not. hahaha I forgot to mention that the battery operated tv is a nice thing to have and something that we all need to have. I also need one. Since hurricane season is just around the corner one of our local early morning tv stations give away one hurricane survival kit each morning for a month and a small tv is one of the items.
Be safe.

As one who lived in the lightning capital (Florida) and in hurrican prone areas (Florida and Texas Gulf coasts), I learned to be prepared for storms. I have both candles and flashlights in every room in the house, just in case.

Great idea. We don't have hurricanes but are annoyed with tornadoes. When I left for work last night I left a flashlight by the front door since storms were predicted. We sure had a major storm again last night along with hail and high winds. I didn't need the flashlight since our power was ok. Thanks for responding.

I love scented candles. So we have plenty of them in every room, plus a way to light them (can't forget that!).
The candles can get me to the flashlights, which we have on each floor.
Our electricity hasn't gone out for more than a few minutes in our new house, and we've lived here for a year now. I don't think we're going to need them, but just in case...
I also went to GoodWill stores and found candle sconces to put on the walls. I have one in every room. That way, if the electricity does go out at night and stays off, we at least have a lit path to other rooms, out of the way and in no danger of falling over and burning the house down.
I also keep a good supply of emergency candles for the sconces!

We have two cats. That's why a lot of my candles are on the walls. I won't light a candle on a table until I plan to be in that room the entire time it's lit.

Both actually. We really need them as well. We have 7 children...3 really little ones so those really come in handy when we lose power. We don't have a battery operated tv but we do have a radio. I might look into getting a tv though.thats not a bad idea.

Seven children, wow you are busy. The battery operated tv we have is very old. Maybe the newer ones will be digital ready so there won't be a problem next Feb. Our tv will be obsolete at that time without the $40 digital box. Not sure the tv is worth it! I do use it alot when the power is out. Thanks for responding.

I learned the hard way to keep a flashlight right by my bed. We also keep a few more in strategic places throughout the house.
When I was pregnant with my son, we had an early snow storm come through, at the beginning of October. My husband was working nights at the time, and called me while the electricity was out, to tell me he was going to be late coming home from work. I was upstairs in bed, but the only phones we had upstairs at that point were cordless phones. It was still completely dark, but I knew I had to make it down the stairs to answer the phone, just in case it was something important. I made it down there fine, but I definitely don't want to be caught in that situation again!

I don't even have a flashlight, but I have plenty of candles around and I have one of those radios that you crank the handle to get it to work. That way I don't have to worry about batteries. It comes in handy when the power goes out! I want to get a flashlight like that too.

We have already started having storms.I know where our flashlights and candles are. Just not sure about the batteries. I guess now would be a good time to check. Thanks for the reminder.

yes, i always do have a flashlight by my side specially if there is a storm but no battery operated television, a battery operated and the old reliable transistor radio would do well enough to keep me updated on what is going on.

We have flashlights all over this house. There's just the matter of actually finding them when the power goes out. We have a lot of candles around the house and those always get used in the event that the power goes out. I guess though that means finding a flashlight first so I can find the candles. I always have a few candles available in the living room so as long as I can get to the lighter and the candle I should be able to get everything else that I need too.

I do. We have had alot of storms in the last three years in our area. Our powert has went out alot of times too. I hate to sit in the dark or find my way around the house without a flashlight or a candle. I have both of them around when we have storms coming. I don't have a battery operated television but I do have a scanner that runs off of a battery. I would like to have a television that runs off of a battery too though. that would be nice. My scanner has a weather channel though.

We have a flashlight handy and there are display candles we can use. We used to have frequent poweroutages in our area for years with and without storms, lol, until the power company finally decided to put in a new transformer or somthing like that. It's always good to keep a flashlight handy. Just just never know when you will be in the dark...

In the part of the earth I live, keeping flashlight or any source of light close by in the night is a normal thing, but the issues is how safe is that your source of light to (you and other values). Recently, a whole family was lost in a fire out break that was cause by electrical fault. It was very pathetic. So, when next you are thinking about lightening up your room when you are going to bed, please let SAFETY be your watchword.
