Account of an Epilator Virgin

Ok, so being a lifelong shaver, I bought my first epilator last week and just got the guts up to use it for the first time on my legs. It's a Remington if anyone was interested. When I first touched skin to machine, I admit I yelped. It felt like something akin to an electric shock. I just grit my teeth and carried on though. Eventually you get used to it. It's the shins that are the worst part! Now my legs seem to resemble plucked chickens. They're covered in sore little red dots. I put aloe vera gel on them and I'm hoping they go down quickly. Out of curiosity I briefly tried it on my armpit hair. Let me tell you I'll have to be drunk to try that again, let alone the bikini line. Does anyone else epilate? I'd be glad to hear your experiences.

I've never used an Epilator, but I did use an Epilady many years ago. It yanks out your hair by the roots. Is that what an Epilator does? If so, I can surely empathize with you! Yep, it hurt! You're legs will get smooth soon, but right after using it the hair follicles are irritated and swell a bit. After time, it will get better. But I used to pluck some of them because the Epilady didn't get the tiny little hairs. I started plucking if a few hairs were growing faster than others. (It hurt a lot less than that Epilady!) After awhile, I noticed some of the hairs weren't growing back anymore. I was so encouraged! Now, all I have are a stray hair or two that grow back. It's so lovely not to have to shave. Armpit hair? Can't say I tried that. It was painful enough on my legs! LOL

Yep, it's the exact same thing. Epilady must just be what your brand calls it. I've heard such horror stories of infected ingrowing hairs that I'm quite apprehensive. I'll definitely be exfoliating an awful lot! I love the idea of the hairs not growing back. How amazing not to have to worry about stubble all the time?!

Thanks for the helpful tips. I'll be sure to be careful!

Yeah, they get infected every now and then, but it's rare. At least for me, it is. The trick is to just keep your skin as clean as possible and yes, exfoliate as often as you can! Always wash your legs right before you do it, then right afterwards. (A good rubdown with soap and water is fine afterwards.) You get ingrown hairs even if you don't shave at all, but pulling the hairs out by the root allows bacteria to get even farther down the hair shaft. So, keep it clean and you should do just fine.

I've never used an epilator it just looks too painful, I have had my legs waxed before but that pulls out more hair at once so must logically be less painful for the amount of time. It doesn't sound as painful as I thought it would be though I may try it, I'd just hate to buy one then find it's too painful to use and have wasted my money.

I had the exact same worry actually, but if you're anything like me, having spent good money on it (and they aren't cheap!) it's made me determined to get good use out of it. I'll persevere through obstinacy!

LOL ladies. So sorry for laughing. You both have alot of guts to try that. Me, I am a wimp with a capitol 'W', lol Bought myself a waxing kit once though. Actually I think it was a gifr, I have tried very hard to block those memories Used it on my legs, never finished and can still feel the pain. I go to the beauty salon once a month now to get my eye brows waxed by a professional and use plain old razors on my legs and arm pits and sometimes bakini line. Wish there was a better way that wasn't painful. The cream hair removers are literally 'for the birds'!

I tried waxing my legs at home once and ended up covered in awful bruises. I looked like I'd been battered! Never again! I've had a professional bikini wax done once and I think it's the most painful thing I've ever experienced! Worse than my tattoos! What we women have to go through!

Oh my god that sounds horrible. Well you just made my decision on the subject for me, I will notbe buying one of those things. I just use a regular razor. I would rather have to shave my legs everyday then rip the hair out of them every week, thanks.

*lol* Sorry I scared you off!

I have an epilator and my experiences sound just like yours, idont find it too painfull on my legs and you quickly get used to it, i have the braun silk epil one and it comes with a ice pack that you put in the freezer and put it on the skin before you epilate and i must admit it does help to numb the area and makes it a little more comfortable. I breifly tried it on my underarms and i would never even attempt it again that was just too much, i never tried it on my bikini line im a wimp lol! so i stick with shaving there and just use it on my legs lol

I think the more expensive models came with ice packs, but I went for one of the cheaper options as we're really cash shy at the moment. I think I'll get a bag of frozen peas out of the freezer for next time! Thanks for the tip!
