1950s sports car racing

Who knows what kind of information I can find here, but... I am the granddaughter of 1950s race car driver Ernie McAfee (no relation to Jack McAfee). I know the basics of course, but I was wondering if anyone had any information about him. Maybe if you knew him, if you saw him race, etc. Along with racing he owned an automotive shop on Sunset Boulevard in California. He passed away during a race in 1956.

I hope that someone has something relating to your grandfather. He must have lived during the time of James Dean who was also a passionate race car driver and who met the same fate as your grandfather.
