So why do you think some (many) parents want their children to be Special Education students?

I think if a child qualifies for Special Education, they will be better suited in a program designed for them. Gifted children need extra work and challenges to keep them from being bored. Children with autism need special help. Children with physical needs gain from other programs. If they can get they help why wouldn't they?

I should have been clearer with my question. Some parents of children who DO NOT qualify for services insist on having their child be Special Ed. Why would a parent want their child to be SPED if the child is not?

Well...My son has autism and is high functioning, he could go either way but with how he doesn't look different the kids in school make fun of he. He has Asperger's Syndrome and so he doesn't get certain things: humor, social norms, things of that sort. I have him at a school that is for kids with ADHD and/or Autism, he has been at the school for a year and has gotten more help there than he has for the 4 years he spend in traditional public school.
