Okay so I just recently bought myself a guitar. I want to teach myself how to play it. Can any of you give me some advice on how to go about this? I mean there are a lot of people that have taught themselves to play an instrument and I am hoping that with patient I'll be able to teach myself. I want some advice from some fellow guitar players on how to go about this and how they learned to play.
Some help please?

Hello ayumitakashi,
Forgive me to drop by even if I don't know how to play a guitar..LOL, I am learning before with the help of my good friends but due to time constraint, I never made it, this time I am watching at you tube, Some people posted there how to play with their favorite music which I also like. I hope we will learn soon!

It's okay. Someone told me that I should go to youtube and I'm going to go and see. At least you have some friends that know how to play the guitar and can teach you, I really don't have anyone to teach me. But it sounds like youtube would be cool. Thanks for that.

You should go to learn from a person , who can play and teach you to read tab or notes . After that you will do practice , otherwise you will spend so much time and you will get nothing .
You should take some beginner class and after that you can teach yourself . Thats my view ...
I play guitar and it has been a long time I am practicing it . Still I go to teacher for learn things as he has spend his all life in guitar and he can give me so many things , which I will never come to know from myself as I am not going to be professional .
Thanks !!!

Well right now I don't really know anyone that plays a guitar. I live in a place where mostly spanish music and hip hop is heard. I love both of those genres but nobody around where I live listens to rock or anything and doesnt know how to play. So I don't know who to go, and I really can't pay anyone to teach me because i'm broke and i have college to pay for and other stuff. So this is the only other option I have. There are many people that know how to play the guitar and have taught themselves and are really good. I don't see why I can't be the same, with practice I'm sure that I will.

Hi, I suggest you to find some websites that teach you how to play guitar for free. I forgot the links as I don't have to use it now. Other than that, do learn from friends that know how to play guitar. It's faster to learn from someone you know well. The most important thing is you must persevere on even though you felt pain when pressing those guitar fret. That's normal, without pain, you will not be a good guitar player.
All the best!

Learn about major chords first i think, i myself started it by learning chords like C,D,Dm,E,Em,G,A,Am, i skipped on Cm, F, Fm, Gm, B, Bm because it's hard to do for me at first, but after lots of practice finally i can play all of those chords too. by learning only G,C,D you already can play a simple song, mostly children songs LOL besides a lot of practice i also do ask my cousin, my friends about the right technique, the picking, rhythm, listen to music a lot and try to play along with it. My advice is practice a lot, since practice makes perfect, if you get bored or frustrate, stop for a while or else u will get more frustrated with your practice, do something else and if u've been refresh, practice again :)

Hi!
I´ve learned alone too!
I play guitar since 1998.
Search for "tabs", you´ll get a lot of information! Tabs can help people to play just by following the numbers!
Any problem, just message me! We chat in some IM!
See ya!

As for me, I started to have a curiosity on a guitar when I was 15 y/o. I was able to teach myself on how to play it using the chord chart. Here, it will show you how you'll form your fingers to form a particular chord. But let me remind you, frustrations is ahead of you. Deal with it, continue to practice. To boost yourself, familiarized first the basic chords, or find a song with a simple chords on it for you to be able to play it quickly. Say for example "Knockin' On Heaven's Door", you can play it with G-D-Am-G-D-C chords. Try to familiarized these chords then you already have a song for it.

I would actually recommend going to a community college and taking a class if possible to get you started. You can develop bad habits sometimes if you start on your own. I've taught myself a lot of different instruments, but with the guitar I tried at first and came to class with a couple bad habits already. But luckily, I was able to break them quickly and with a year of lessons I made it into a guitar ensemble when I finally got to college.
The classes were only 1 unit per semester so they were really cheap too (like $11).

I guess the best way to do it is by being taught by a person who knows how to play the guitar, that's what I always tell new guitar players. The easiest way is to learn the basics step by step and with the help of visual aides, then you get to try to follow them and ask also if in-case you don't know what a certain chord is.
I think others have already gave you sites where you could learn and know more about guitar playing, just try looking at them and see if you can find some tutorials that would really make you feel comfortable as you play your music.

Happy to help any way I can. (I love playing the guitar)
Get yourself some finger exercises to get accustomed to using your fingers without looking. (Takes time)
Also get some chords and practice those.
Take out your fav. music and jam away for rhythm practice.
Above all, have fun!

Yeah I know that sounds like the hardest thing. To do it without looking, I predict that, that will be one of the hardest thing that I'm going to have to learn.

Start with the basics. Like forming the chords D,G,A,C,E. If you don't have a friend to teach you the basics of guitar playing, try youtube. i think there are a lot people who post tutorials on guitar in that site.
Don't rush on playing difficult musical pieces. Try the easy ones first. I suggest that you buy a song book. Choose a song you want to play and try to master that song. When you are satisfied with the way you play that song, you can move to another song. Just keep on practicing.
Hope this helps.

Yeah it helps a lot and thanks. Everything that everyone has told me has been helping tremendously. I really appreciate it. I don't any friends that play, my friends all think it's cool to play a guitar and want to buy a guitar but they don't take the time to actually start learning. But I really want to learn and I am going to take the easy pieces like you said.

The first thing I learned was how to read tabs. Go to Ultimate Guitar to find songs t learn. They also have a message board for guitar players to connect with each other. Just remember the frets on the guitar represent numbers. The first one is one, etc. Most guitars go up to 22 to 24 frets. Reading tabs will come naturally to you after a little while.

I taught myself how to play also, you have to really want to learn, because it takes alot of practice and patience. I bought myself a guitar book and learned the basic chords and just took off from there, I'm no pro tho. I found this website helpful take a look at it. Good Luck. http://guitar.about.com/library/bluguitarlessonarchive.htm

Get a decent songbook, or search online. For tablature resources, Ultimate Guitar is nice..you might also try to use Guitar Pro software. It's great for learning new songs as you can listen to what you're trying to play (as opposed to a tab printed on paper).

A great way to learn to play is to get with a friend who also plays. He/She can show you a lot. Also, there are a ton of free websites that can help you learn to play. Check out www.justinguitar.com or www.rayred.com. You can also go to easyguitarguide.blogspot.com. There aren't many lessons there yet, but they are coming. Bookmark it so that you can check back often. Also, be sure to visit the sponsors.
