It is no doubt soccer. I wish soccer would get big here in America. My friends and I always get together for the World Cup and Olympics. We really want to make a trip to South Africa, but only a few will be out of college by then and not long enough to pay for such a trip. Attending a big soccer match is definitly a dream of mine. I want to see how it compares to 86,000 people at an Auburn football game.

Don't worry Bother! you don't realize it, But soccer is the number one sport played in America. Trust me! There are more soccer field in America, than there are Football, Baseball, Basketball fields put together! It doesn't seem like it because of 2 reasons.
one reason is TV plays many of other sports, that the least funded sport in America is pushed to the side.
second reason is plain and simple, American sport fans have no passion for any sport! Most of them go to the games when the teams are winning. And even if your soccer team is doing well, how would you know if it isn't televised! American fans will never have that passion like other countries do about soccer.
But let me tell you something, Americans are known to try to be the best at everything, and now we want to be one of the best teams in the world. And their actions speak! Didn't play so well the last world cup, but managed to still be ranked 8th in the world! ;). And now the US soccer team plays better away. But truthfully, we are always the away team :(. We are being trained to play away! Which will help in future world cups. WHO NEEDS FANS! American build there fans with in there Hearts! were ever we go, it's home to us!

Good responce. It seems a bit optimistic though. I haven't seen any stats on soccer fields, but you could be right there. Mainly because a soccer field is nothing more than a field and some goals. I would think more people actually play basketball in America than play soccer. I know more public schools in the area I grew up played baseball and basketball more than soccer. Our soccer team had a harder time drawing up a schedule than the baseball or basketball team. I want to throw football in there too, but I am not sure about that. We were a fairly big school, but some of the smaller schools didn't have football teams because of the expense. I would disagree with your statement that no Americans have passion for sports. Have you seen the Raiders fans? The Dawg Pound? Endless passion from those people from two teams who haven't been winning (Cleveland only started winning last season). If you make the push into college football, then things get even more crazy. Mississippi State fans and Ole Miss fans are everywhere. What have those teams done lately? They still bring in thousands of fans to every game. It is popular for the girls to sew phrases from their college teams in their wedding dresses. I find it hard to say there isn't passion in American sports. There are fair weather fans for every sport of course. I guarantee you there are the same fans in Europe when it comes to soccer. There will always be the people who join a team when they are doing good and then forget about them during the rough times. Its just your average fan. I agree with you in that American soccer wants to become the best. It seems like MLS is doing fairly good and giving America a chance to develop some good players for the national team. I believe we will be able to compete and at least qualify every year. Looking at the quality of our team last World Cup, I find it hard to believe that they were ranked 8th in the world. I remember looking at that and seeing some teams behind us which seemed to be better. Of course thats my opinion and I haven't watched hours and hours of international soccer. Anyways, I hope we do develop a competitive international team. I would love to cheer for them.

I tend to agree with you. Although football is very big here, soccer has grown at a high rate of speed. My 5 grandchildren all have played or are still playing soccer. One grandson and his sister even played together on a team. They have soccer games for the Playstation. And, we are constantly watching the soccer games on the television. It is a very highly competitive sport.

Soccer for sure! However, Football is on the rise! More and more games are being scheduled to be played in England. Not to mention NFL Europa and the CFL (Canada) are taking off...
Who knows? Soccer has been dominant for many years (and will likely continue to be so) but, football may be closing the gap a tad.
