Which expensive photo camera do you think is worth to be bought ?

I used 35mm for many, many years, then got a Kodak 3.1 mega pixel camera, then two years ago upgraded Kodak 6.1 mega pixel.
I talked with many parents at my school I work at and they claim Nikon, and cannon are the best. So I'm now going to get a Nikon in about 6 months. cost? about $1,000 for body of only, lens are extra, same with everything else for this camera
