Foreign language in school?

United States

My daughter was talking to me about what foreign language she should take in school. When I was a kid I took latin, which I never used, so I suggested spanish. Are your children required to take a foreign language in order to graduate? What language do you think is most beneficial for kids to study? Why?

We are required to take French from grades 3ish-9th. I also took Spanish for 3 years afterwards. French is obviously helpful here in Canada, and I assume Spanish is in areas of the Sates. I prefer Spanish myself...not quite sure why. I just had more fun learning it. They're very similar languages. Being fluent in more than one language is VERY helpful when applying for jobs as well.

LOL...I didn't even notice the typo until I read your second post. Spanish is very helpful here in the States. I interviewed for some jobs when I was younger and one of the questions they asked was if we were fluent in Spanish. That is why I suggested it to her. I agree that being multilingual is a good thing. It never hurts anyway.

Yes, employers LOVE when you can speak more than one language. It's also a good way to learn about other cultures. I always enjoyed languages myself, I guess that helped a lot too :) I like learning.

I don't really know which language is beneficial for kids to study. But when I was in high school I studied French for three years. And now in college so far i've taken one year of Italian. I think that learning new languages is beautiful and it makes you learn more about other people's culture.

I agree, in the US the most important language to learn is actually Spanish. The it depends on what she would like to do in the future, for example I studied English and Spanish in the past, but now that I work as designer and I'm having a professional course in Italy, I'm studying Italian in an Italian language school for foreigners. It's easier to learn a language in the country where it's spoken, so in the future she could think about a language travel ;-)
