Immoral poverty

A question which has been posed to me is if it is still wrong to do some illegal activities if the person that does it is living in poverty. Generally situations ranging from stealing food to selling daughters into slavery.
My immediate reaction is that even if the people are living in poverty it is still not acceptable. In order for the law to be effective, it has to apply to everyone regardless of circumstances.
What does everyone else think of this?

I think the economy is causing a lot more crime these days. And I absolutely do not think you should lie, cheat or steal...well a white lie now and then, but you know what I'm saying. That's my 3 rules.
I heard of people who really needed groceries, stealing some out of the back of a pickup truck that was parked at a store. I thought that was so bad. And the people who had done it, I just would have never of expected it from them.

Exactly. The rules that keep society going apply to everyone. Stealing food because you are starving is still stealing and needs to be dealt with as such. Otherwise you get to a point where people feel it is alright to steal and so nobody will leave their house for fear of the crime outside.
