You should be able to find a real good bargain at a used computer store. If you knew computers better you could get one from ebay, sometimes you can get a good deal. Do you still talk to your computer guy, he might know of someone with a used laptop. I don't see anything wrong with buying one used, it will safe you a ton of money.

I don't have a lap top, but I would dearly love to have one someday. My one son-in-law bought a used one about 3 years ago and it's been constantly in use since he purchased it. Never had any problems with it. I think the biggest thing is that you get it from someplace that is reputable so you know you won't be getting ripped off. I hope you get one soon, that would be awesome!

If I have an immediate need for a laptop and my budget isn't enough for a brand new one, I will certainly go for a refurbished unit. Here in the Philippines, branded used laptops are normally sold at about half the price of lower quality brand new units. Used laptops sold at surplus stores usually go with three months warranty.

My laptop is a refurbished one, meaning that it was second hand, went through extensive testing to ensure it works and even some upgrades as well.
It works just fine. I prefer buying the refurbished computers as they have already been broken in and all mechanical problems would have already been taken care of.
The cost is good too, about half the price brand new, and mine came with a carry bag, which not all do.

Used to having a tight budget :-) I'm also used to buying second hand or used computer stuffs. Four years ago, I bought a surplus NEC Slim PC (Pentium III 500 MHz) with LCD monitor. Though it's practically used every day, even lent it to my sister for several months for her autocad projects, it's still working so fine up to this day and never had any problem with it. So I would say, in case I can't afford a brand new laptop I will go for a used one. Just be extra careful when choosing. Good luck!

well if you ask me then i would suggest you that you dont go for such laptops. see the thing is your money is hard earned. you only said that you dont have money for a new one. so that means you dont have ample of money. if if you have a laptop then why do you wanna sell it ?
eigther it is giving problems or you have a requirement for a better one. if it is bad and you get that type of piece then you have to face problems and old laptop parts are also very hard to find. so i would suggest that if you really wanna buy one then get a new one even if you have to wait a bit more

I'm looking to buy a laptop but I'm not so sure I'd get a used one..MAYBE a refurbished one but even those I'd be leery of...I've actually been considering selling my desktop and getting a laptop as the replacement rather than getting a laptop as my secondary unit...

No, no.
A used lap top is a big no-no because you just can't tell how long the lap top would last.
You might buy it today and it seems to work fine... and then die next week. We sure don't want that.
Do you WANT a laptop or do you NEED a laptop? If you NEED one, then we have no choice but to find something to fit your budget. If possible, still go for a new laptop instead of an old.
If you don't NEED a laptop but need to change a computer, why don't you consider a desktop which is cheaper for the same parts?

Even if you had substantial savvy yourself, I would advise against having anything to do with a second-hand machine, under any circumstances other than reconditioning/refurbishing. There could be malware/grayware on the machine, there could be child p**n hidden on it, there could be gigabytes of pirated software hosted on the machine, the hard drive could be about to fail...any number of things could be wrong.
If anything, I'd recommend looking into refurbished or ultra low-cost systems. What kind of price range are you looking into? If you could get a fairly modern IBM/Lenovo for $399.99; with built-in wireless connectivity, CD-RW/DVD Combo, 1.6 GHz Intel Pentium M Centrino processor, 512 MB of RAM, 40 GB hard drive, and Windows XP Pro; would you be interested?
It comes with 90 days limited parts and labor. This is certainly on the modest side as far as warranties go, but it's a whole lot better than a second-hand system that could just as easily turn out to be a liability. I could even offer you remote assistance, and install free security software and other utilities as you please. Let me know!

Hi Marcia-to be honest you can get new laptops for virtually the same price as used ones nowadays-weel I live in the UK and have looked at them myself so in my point of view I would get a new one
Also with used ones it always makes me wonder what was wrong with them in the befinning when sold to the shop-littleowl
