And to expand on what someone said above me, Bob Rock played bass on St. Anger and did a couple shows with them during the period between Newsted and Trujillo. I probably dont consider him an official member of Metallica though, just a producer who did some bass duties when needed.

Ron Mcgovney a friend of james hetfield was the first bass guitarist Dave mustaine 1981-82 cliff burton replaced him in 1982 to sept1986 who was killed in tour bus accident jason newstead from 1986 to 2001 robert trujillo the present bassist
