Okay here it is:
First of the the crane is a hydraulic one that attaches to a bldg. The one it was affixed to was bet. 15-18 stories high. The crane operator sits roughly 10 stories above the crane itself.
When it snapped off the operator came down w/ it. That's a 25+ story plummet. On the way down the giant crane sheared off terraces attached to apartments across the street. No one knows if anyone might have been having coffee or breakfast on their balcony @ the time.
Two people are confirmed dead. A half dozen have been pulled from the wreckage. 7+ people's conditions have not been disclosed. No one has located the crane operator as yet. No one really sure how many, if any, pedestrians walking un the sidewalk might be trapped. A huge portion of the crane that is still attached to the building is dangerously unstable and needs to be addressed immediately.
Emergency crews from all over NYC are still scrambling to the site and numerous blocks and avenues are sealed off.
Stay tuned.

Thanks to your discussion I put on the tv and I'm watching it. How sad, another accident like this that probably could and should have been avoided. I wonder if it's the fault of the inspectors that should be giving the "OK" that the crane is 100% safe or the fault of the operator. I know the area well, it is across the street from the projects on first avenue and 91 Street. Just the thought of sitting in your apartment and having something like this happen - how scary.

It's quite frightening. And it's confirmed that the crane operator did perish. There are a couple of penthouses [not known if anyone was inside at the time] that were absolutely smashed, thus rupturing any water pipes which I've heard tenants that were interviewed state that their plumbing had exploded causing water damage/ flooding.
Thanks for responding, howard96h.
I'll be updating as this goes on.
I reside on the West 80s on the 11th floor & I'm moving, but not for this reason thankfully. It's a scary thing.
