Money or Food? What do you give to beggers on the street?

When you encounter a begger on the street, do you give them money? food? do you pass them on by?
If you do give them something, do you have certain criteria that they must meet such as being dressed poorly or opening the door to a business for you?
If you pass them on by, why do you do it? Does it ever make you feel guilty?

i dont carry food with me when i go out, but if im not feeling embarassed doing it and if i have some extra cash ill probably buy them food rather than just give them the money, but its kinda embarassing giving to beggars, i mean it caught the attention of others, and i dont like to appear like a goodie to shoes in public, so i just hand some change then move along as quickly

I live in a large city so people barely notice ME much less what I do. I guess that is fortunate. I usually have some cereal bars in my bag because I take them to work so I am not above sharing!

The majority of the time if they ask for money for food, I or my husband usually just by them food. I am always very iffy about whether or not to give them money. I know many of these individuals really do need the money and not all of them use it for the bad, but I feel more comfortable giving them food if this is the cause for their asking. I don't ever pass them by because my husband believes that it is God coming in the flesh and if we pass him by that we are going to be punished. lol.. I don't believe that so much, but just to please him, if I have even just a little bit of change, I give it. I really don't have a certain criteria for them to meet in order for me to help them. I sort of get this feeling inside, and normally I can tell if they are conning me or if they are seriously in need. Whenever I am in a position when I cannot give them, I do feel guilty. I know it isn't my place to help all of the people in need, but when I feel someone is in need and I am able to see it first hand, I feel terrible if I can't help them out.

That is very interesting...I wonder what type of food??? Cereal bars or something that they could keep with them and have several meals? or a sandwich?

We have a lot of street children in our Country and when I will meet one, I will give them food whatever is in my purse, biscuits or candies. I don't like to hand them money.

If I had a wish it would have to be that there was no poverty at all in this world. Here in my country one does find people begging.I think the real reason they do that is Food and nothing else. They are looking for survival and nothing like Food to help with that.Giving Money may not solve the purpose as they may be bullied and their money taken away by local goons who most of the times run these gangs which force beggars to earn for them.Giving food is thus the best way to help the beggars.

That is a very interesting take on things. That is terrible! I wonder if they "discipline" the beggers when they don't bring in enough money to please them...
