Hi, I'm thinking of what processor to get inside a laptop, and I was wondering if you can explain to me what FSB and L2 Cache is for performance-wise? Say if im just using photoshop and watching movies, and running alot of apps, but not playing online games etc.
And also, what does TDP, SuperPI, and 3DMark06 CPU mean?
Thanks!

fsb is front side bus.It is data transfer bus that transfer datat from cpu to northbridge of motherboard.Northbridge controls info between ram, agp, pci etc.
L2 cache memory is memory external to the micro processor.Nowadays all microprocessor have l2 cache inside their architecture.
super PI is a software that calculates the value of pie after the decimal point upto 32 million places. It is used by many overclockers to test stability and ability of a processor.
3dmark does advanced gaming benchmarking.

FSB = front side bus - the higher the speed the better.
L2 Cache = level 2 cache - think of it as RAM in the processor - the more the better.
Personally I would go for an Intel Core2Duo M series chip in a laptop as it uses less power to perform so will give you a better battery life over Dual or Quad core processors.
If you are not into the latest games then most mid-range laptops and desktops will be fine for normal programs.
RAM is cheap at the moment so upgrade in that direction for performance. Vista is almost workable with 4GB of RAM. haha

as you said ALLMOST workable :P they still collaps and break your nerves with their pop ups no matter what pc you have :P

FSB means front side bus and it is the main communication path between cpu and RAM.In a mother board it determiners the speed of the computer. It is expressed in Mhz or gigahertz.More the fsb more past your pc is.There are two types of cache memories in the computer.Level one and level two or L1 and L2.It is also a high speed memory placed in between processor and ram.

Look to save you some money while having the best performance make sure that fsb is just a little bellow your mainboards main bus speed so that they colaborate just perfect. L2 cache it's just the more the best :P
