Spiders! Do you like them? Are you afraid of them?

Me? I'm terrified of them. It's not a phobia, though. I was bitten years ago by a brown recluse and had an allergic reaction to it. I got blood poisoning. When I went to the hospital, I got a tetanus shot, and had an allergic reaction to that as well. I almost died. Luckily, there was a "spider specialist" in the hospital who was able to save my life. So, I was seriously traumatized by this. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

That is so sad to hear! And, so scary. The tetanus shot was very smart, too. Many people don't know how dangerous cuts and bites can be, so they don't even go to the hospital. I am happy that you're fine. I hate spiders, too. When I was a little girl, a tiny spider bit my arm and paralyzed it for half an hour. It was so painful. It felt like needles were stabbing my arm the entire time. Not something I would wish on anyone. I hope you are feeling better. Be well!

I'm sorry to hear about what happened to you. I don't blame you for being terrified by spiders. But spiders don't really attack unless there is a potential threat. That brown spider may have seen you as a threat although you may have meant it no harm. I think spiders are wonderful creatures, but I try to avoid them although I'm not afraid of them. I avoid them because I can't tell which ones are harmless and which ones are venomous. I think we should just leave them alone.

I sure didn't mean to make it feel threatened! I was fast asleep when it bit me! It actually bit me twice, once on the palm of my hand and once on my wrist. I may have felt it crawling on me and moved my hand in my sleep, which the spider took as a threat. All I know is that I woke up with a red streak going up my arm. Not a nice thing to see, nope.

Yikes! I am sorry you went through all that! I hate spiders. I am a bit terrified by them. They can even paralyze me with fear sometimes if I don't know how to kill one in my house if it is in a bad position for me to get at in order to kill it. I really hate spiders. They sometimes plague my nightmares. One was in my pants I wear to bed one night. Fortunately, when I went to put them out, it just fell out of them before I even got them on but, ugh! The thought that it might have hung on and then might have been crawling in my pants made me really uncomfortable for the rest of the night. I don't know what kind of spider it was but, I had never seen one like it before so, that creeps me out even more. Ick! I am glad you survived your spider bight. One of my friend's dads was bitten by a brown recluse also. He is an electrician and he went to the breaker box at someone's home once and when he opened the box to work on it, a brown recluse was in there, jumped out at him and landed on his face and bit him. The venom ate away a portion of his skin and now he has a rather big scar. He was lucky too! Those freaking spiders terrify me.

Now I'm going to shake out all of my clothes before I put them on! LOL Yeah, brown recluses can cause serious damage if they don't kill you. I have a scar left from the episode. I was very lucky to have gotten to the hospital as soon as I did so they could begin antibiotics right away. I'm sorry I posted this because I'll probably be dreaming about them tonight. LOL Ah, life. Thanks for the great response. Take care! Dream well!

I dont mind them. I'd prefer not to be bitten by one or crawled on one but they arent scary to me. My younger sister is terrified of them a teenie bitty spider well send her on to a chair screaming kill it kill it. I'm sure the rest of us didnt help as kids tormenting her with them.

I don't like them and I'm a bit afraid of them. The bigger and the fuzzier they are the more menacing they seem to me. I haven't had any bad encounters with them or anything, I just know I reached a certain point where spiders were suddenly pretty evil to me and I was really afraid of them. I'm not really sure what brought it on, but it's not like I really freak out. I can remove myself from the situation if need be without causing a big scene.

Not me! LOL I don't know where you live, but you've probably heard me off in the distance occasionally, whenever I saw a really big spider. I would love to be able to act more, umm... "mature" about them, but I can't. Thanks for the comment. Take care.

Oh mental_ I know all about the recluse spider. I had a friend who got bit and even rushing him to the hospital didn't save him from the ravages of the spider. He's okay though. I hate spiders. I've been bitten several times, I can always tell by the puncture marks. I've never had an experience like yours. My bites do swell up though! My older brother won't kill any living thing. I'm staying with him for a bit. One night, while reading, I sensed a shadow on the wall. I rolled my eyes over to see a large red spider staring at me. I called for my brother, but by the time he arrived with his spider-catching-cup, the spider had crawled away. I couln't stop worrying about where that spider went, since I knew spiders like to eat me. Finally, around 1am I started to fall asleep from pure exhaustion. And then I felt a tiny tickle on my arm and I knew the spider was attacking. I brushed him off, not too gently and called for my brother. I was worried I killed the spider, but he was sitting on the side of my bed and my brother caught him and let him go free outside. Yuck, I really hate spiders, but they love me!

I to have dealt with spiders, but not so dangerous or serious. I have been bitten a couple of times but only a little swelling and pain--no doctor visit. My daughter was like a spider magnet when she was about 2 and although we went to the doctor, there were never any major problems. Even now, we let spiders live because they kill mesquitos, which we really hate. Nobody in our house is afraid of them.

I'm so lucky for you! I wish I could live in harmony with our little 8-legged friends. We just don't get along that well. I'm glad that you've never been bitten by a poisonous one! Thanks for responding. Take care.

If that's not a valid reason to be scared of something I don't know what is! Luckily we don't have any dangerous spiders here in the UK (not including pets, of course). I'm scared of spiders. I love all animals but spiders scare the hell out of me. I don't even know why, I never used to be afraid of them. There's one in the corner of the room above the door right now and i'm just trying really hard to pretend it's not there. One of the disadvantages of living alone. The only comforting thought is that if it comes onto the floor my dog will eat it.

Good dog! Yeah, they're good that way. Whatever is on the floor is legally theirs. Ask any of them! Take care.

Worms? Wow! I love them. Well, I like to go fishing and I also do a lot of gardening, so worms are my friends. They're harmless (most are, anyway) and aren't at all slimy... they just feel that way because they wiggle so much. Thanks for your comment. Take care!

Spiders don't worry me one little bit. If I know there are going to be dangerous ones around I keep my guard up, and be careful around them (same with snakes) but the regular non-threatening ones don't bother me a bit. I'm not scared of snakes either.

I wish I could be like you and not be so afraid of them. Snakes don't bother either. They're usually more afraid of you than you are of them. Thanks for responding. Take care.

I don't like anything that is creepy-crawly. If there is a spider that needs to be disposed of I get one of my kids to take care of it. They usually know because I'll be screaming. lol I'm sorry to hear of your life threatening experience and I'm glad it turned out well in the end. What a lucky break having a spider specialist on duty, that's something else! I really don't like snakes either. There was a snake crossing my road today and a car ran over it's hind section. It was still alive but I don't know how it could survive such an injury. I actually felt bad for it but I wasn't about to stop to help. lol

I know that feeling of feeling bad for something but not daring to try to help it. I ran over a squirrel's foot once, at least I think it was it's foot. It was kinda running in circles in my rear-view mirror. But it was rush hour with a lot of traffic so I didn't think twice about stopping. The next day, though, I was looking for something grey, red and flat on the road and didn't see it. That made me feel better. Thanks! Take care.

Neither of the two, I don't like their looks but I do not fear them at all. I see that they are pretty harmless especially the one you can see at home. But maybe if I see a tarantula I might get afraid but it is not found in my country so I do not see spiders as frightening at all.

I was so scared of spiders. Once, I found a spider in my bathtub and there was a little black spider. I ran out of the bathroom so fast. I didnt even think about killing it. So someone had to kill it for me. I don't like anykind of spiders. They are so creepy. There was a spider on my leg before and I started screaming and crying. I told someone to get it off. And they couldnt find it. I started screaming again because I thought it was under my pants because you know that feeling when a spider is on you and you wag it off but you think its still on you. Well thats how I felt. But one of my roomates found it on the floor. But I ran to my room still because I was so scared of flowers. Theres a lot of stories I could tell but I think thats enough stories. Well I dont have any allergic reactions to spiders. And I faced my fears. So I have nothing to wory about. Some of my roomates were scared of spiders but I taught them how to face there fears. Now I like spiders. So I hold them. And once I made a collection of spiders but I decided to let them free because knew they wanted to get out of those jars.
