Some of you read my discussion on my kitten Alfred being in hospital with chemical burns to his face, well he's doing really well. He's back to normal. I also posted a discussion a few weeks earlier talking baout how my beautiful cat Nigel was hit by a car and killed instantly. They say it happens in threes, well the third has happened. Yesterday I heard a dog yelping in pain so my mum and brothers and I all an out and Eddie our dog was on the road, spinning around on his butt trying to walk off the road. He had been hit by a car and was in a lot of pain.
We brought him inside and had a look and I could tell that he was stable, it seemed he had a broken leg.
So I took him into my work (thank goodness I work at the ermergency center or else my vet bills would have sent me broke the last couple months) and I took some x-rays of him. As it turns out he has a dislocated hip. They put him under anaesthetic last night and popped it back in.
He needs total rest for the next six weeks and all that we need to watch out for are his nerves. They could be just stretched and they can 'come back online' (as the vet put it) by themselves or else he'll need surgery.
So my poor little Eddie's in hospital, I just can't believe my luck lately. It is so important to look after your pets as it only takes one second for them to escape and get out onto the road.
I guess I'll keep you all updated!

OMG - what next? I hope you have no more animals at your place! How much more can you take - first Nigel, then Alfred, now your dog Eddie. Seeing him spinning round on the road like that must have been terrible for you.
Did the driver stop?
A dislocated hip would hve been very painful for Eddie, but at least it's been popped back in now. (Good job you work at a vet practice). I will hope and pray that there is no nerve damage - I suppose time will tell.
Give him a cuddle from me and I hope he is back home with you soon.
Glad to hear that Alfred is doing well too!

No the driver didn't stop, I don't think they realised (hopefully). We think it was the lady over the road because my mother saw a flash of white car go past when Eddie began yelping..and she has a white car that was parked on the road all day, and was gone when we went to help Eddie.
I will give him lots of cuddles thanks! And yes Alfred's doing fine.. I shall post photos now.

Sorry to hear about poor Eddie, how did he escape? I have two gates if my dogs get through the first they have to get to the second and by then they have been spotted? They have got out once that is because some person delivering leaflets left the seconed gate open? But I live in a very quiet Cul-De-Sac so no heavy traffic that makes it safer. Hugs for Eddie.

Our yard is enclosed but there is a gate under the house. Since the day that it happened was the day of my father's birthday, everyone was in and out all day and my younger brothers were running through under the house and we think one of them left it open without thinking. My father actually went and shut it thinking "gee it'd be awful if something happened to Eddie, especially today". But what he didn't know is that Eddie ahd already wandered out onto the road. We are usually really vigilant and now that this has happened, we are making BIG bright signs for both sides of the gate to KEEP THE GATE SHUT PLEASE!!

Awww, that's too bad. How did Eddie run in front of the car? Hopefully everything is okay, but that is a long rest for him...six weeks! Wow. And I'm glad you have connections because you are right vet bills can be a lot. Have a wonderful day.

So sad that you lost your Nigel and for Eddie as well after being hit by a car too. Will pray for him that he gets well soon, coffeeshot. Glad Alfred hasn't suscumbed to the same fate even thou he was hurt as well. Those chemical burns can be pretty nasty.

Sorry about all the pet trouble. I hope things start looking better soon. Your lucky you work for a vet, you would be screwed with all those bills.

I am so sorry to hear that coffeeshot. do you live on a busy street? I hate when people run over and animal and will not even stop to see if its alive or try to find the owner... I mean 5 minutes of your time is that to much to ask when you have hit someones pet? It just bites my butt. Hon I hope all is well or will be well with your pup.

Oh, man, coffeeshot, I think you need to consider a taller fence or something! The only times our dog got out was either because a kid left the gate open or the nieghbors tore down their fence and was between getting the new one up.
Either way, both times I saw her before she got too far.

Oh honey I know it is all too easy for pets to get themselves into trouble no matter how careful and attentive you are! I am so sorry that Eddie has been hurt but isn't it wonderful that it looks like he is going to be fine! I know it will be hard to get him to rest but it could have been so much worse! I do hope that Eddie doesn't need surgery- look forward to hearing from you! xxx

Hello dear,
Please raise your fence at home if these things are going to happen or was your gate open at that time?
First thing we taught our dog when she was a baby was not to go out of the gate. One of us will stand there outside the gate and the other will be inside with the dog. She was just a month old at that time. Whenever she started moving to the person outside all of us together say no and keep petting her. She learnt very well and now even if the gate is open she will not get out. Like that if we can show a little bit of patience we can teach the dog everything.
How is your pet now ? Is he fine? Dogs can take care themselves. It will heal on its own. Don't worry. At least you could take yours to the vet hospital. We couldn't when sh had her front leg injured when she ran into my son's bike.
The vet was our friend and he came home. With all the lights in the living room switched on she had surgery at home itself, in the night around 12. He had to stitch her up about 10-12 stitches were there. She healed soon.
Poor things they can't even say where it is hurting.. they can just whine.. What to do??

I am glad to hear that your kitty is doing well, but poor Eddie, that is really horrible. But if it does happen in three's then hopefully this is the end of it and at least he has not broken his leg.
It is a good job you work in a vets, I know how expensive they can be from when I had my own pets and it is really horrible when they became ill and I was not sure if I could afford to get them treated or not. One of the reasons why I no longer have any pets of my own.

I think if I were in your shoes I would be wrapping my animals in cotton wool and locking them up somewhere safe! I can't believe you are having such bad luck lately. What dreadful news, I'm so sorry.
I hope Eddie is feeling a bit better very soon. He's lucky to have a Mum who knows what to do in these sort of emergencies.

I am so sorry to hear about your pets. Pets and children seem to have a lot in common when it comes to keeping an eye on them, it only takes a few seconds for them to get hurt. I hope Eddie will be okay without any further intervention.

I don't think i have read about your kitten yet. I have several discussions to go through. I ma very sorry to hear about your kitten and dog though. I am glad that your kitten is okay and that your dog's hip was all that needed fixed on him. That is awful. I guess the car never stopped to see if the dog was alright either. That sucks. I am a dog lover and hate to see them mistreated. I hope your little Eddie turns out okay after he heals. I keep my dog indoors at all times and when he goes to potty, he goes into a fenced in back yard.

oh dear i'm so sorry to hear about eddie. but then again it's true about the 'happening in three' part. good thing is all three has happened and you can finally relax.
so glad to hear that eddie is not seriously wounded. it's so heart rending to see our baby suffering. i think i will go mad with anxiety if my babies ever get hit by a car. send my love to eddie and hope he recovers completely soon.

On a similar topic relating to pet safety, those little stretchy strings you tie to doorknobs? Most likely you have seen these before, they are cat toys and normally have feathers or something on one end.
I came home from work and my cat had tangled his paw up in it so badly that to remove it I had to do it with a razor blade (the toy, not his paw). Who knows how long he was stuck to that door?
With so many other things taking our focus it's hard to look and see the dangers in some of the most simplistic things.
