Writer without a Message

I often say that I'm a writer without a message. I know that I can express myself quite well by writing. However, I don't know what to write. Writing a bestselling book is one of my most cherished dreams, but I don't even know what to say.
To writers out there, where do you get your material? How do you get inspired?

If you want to write you must write. I find it easier to write assignments where publishers set out their requirements, and then I can do my own research and write an article for that title. I also enter contests where titles are supplied and then I can write about those topics.
Why not join a few writing sites and enter some free contests where themes and titles are provided.
A non-fiction book can only become a bestseller because it is written about something people really want to know more about. Fiction bestsellers are usually books which are heavily promoted by the publishers from their own authors.

I'm going to try to enter as many contests as I possibly can. It's good practice, right? Thanks.

Hello blindmoongoddess.
Inspiration is all around us, look out a window, go to the local mall and people watch, make up little stories in your head about people that walk by your house.
Keep notes when you see something interesting. Start a file of all those little fascinating tidbits that you've written down. Construct characters that, although you don't know what they will be doing in your book, they will make for an interesting person to read about.
Read a nonfiction book about a subject you are interested in and figure out how you can use the information to construct a situation in your book. Add that info to your file.
Listen to music, it can be very inspiring. Sometimes, just sitting at the coffee shop can trigger lots of creative thoughts and plotlines.
Good luck with your writing, blindmoongoddess.

Yes, I agree. There is plenty of material all around us. I just have to learn how to have "saper vedere," the ability to see. Thanks for the great response.

I have 2 novels planned, one which I have already started but which is two folds (2 books in one this is all I'm saying :))
I do a lot people watching, just observe their behaviors, body language and so on. I also take time and look at everything that is around me. Where do I get my inspiration? well for starters life experiences, strangers I meet along the way, things I read in the newspapers. I think all it takes is that one tiny little glimpse of something that will spark the creativity within.

The main thing that inspires me is some of my favorite films. I've written things that have been in movies before, but I change things up a bit. I take scenarios from a B plot in a movie or even a television show and branch off from there. I get into the mind's of the characters and I try to see how they would solve things in their daily lives. My writing mostly consists of more character driven stuff than scenario, time and place.
