I made some German Potato Salad to go with dinner last night. I had not had it in a long time and I think the only time I ever had it before was out of a can. It turned out really good. German Potato Salad is different than most potato salads because it is served hot. Have you ever had German Potato Salad before? What did you think of it?

Hot German Potato Salad 4 medium round red potatoes or white (1 1/3 pounds) 3 slices bacon, cut into 1-inch pieces 1 medium onion, chopped (1/2 cup) 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon celery seed Dash pepper 1/2 cup water 1/4 cup white or cider vinegar 1. Place potatoes in 3-quart saucepan; add enough water just to cover potatoes. Cover and heat to boiling; reduce heat to low. Cook covered 30 to 35 minutes or until potatoes are tender; drain. Let stand until cool enough to handle. Cut potatoes into 1/4-inch slices. 2. Cook bacon in 10-inch skillet over medium heat until crisp. Remove bacon from skillet; drain on paper towels. 3. Cook onion in bacon fat in skillet over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until tender. Stir in flour, sugar, salt, celery seed and pepper. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until mixture is bubbly; remove from heat. 4. Stir water and vinegar into onion mixture. Heat to boiling, stirring constantly. Boil and stir 1 minute; remove from heat. 5. Stir in potatoes and bacon. Heat over medium heat, stirring gently to coat potato slices, until hot and bubbly.

Being raised in Detroit area, it was very Ethnic, there was a German reastraunt near by and they served it as a side dish alot. I loved it, as I recall it has a little meat in it, and a vineger based sauce, correct? That was about 40 years ago,LOL,but still remember how good it was. Thanks for the memories! tdemex

I had a Great Aunt that used to make German Potato salad. She always called it by its German name...Katoferschlot (I'm sure that that isn't anywhere near correctly spelled, but it sounds like that). I used to call it patewy-slop, if that is any indication of how I liked it. Now, I've never tried it made by anyone else, and I'm sure it could be made differently. To me, potato salad should be served cold, that is how I like it best.

Deutsch Kartoffelsalat is what it is if you translate it from English to German.

Oh, so that is the difference! I hope it was delicious. I am sure that it was great and everyone loved it. As for me, I have to eat the cold potato salad just cause I don't like hot eggs. How weird is that? Anyway thanks for the recipe. I read up a little further. I may try that out. But I will be chilling mine!

There are no hard boiled eggs in the German Potato Salad, so no hot eggs to worry about.

I had a friend who was married to a German who liked to cook. He was a really cool dude and cooked very well. So one day we were invited to stay for dinner. I knew we were in for a treat because it smelled so good. One of the things he'd made was Potato Salad. And I was going like ....ohhh But it's warm! This is sooo good and things to that effect. If you haven't tried this dish you really out to because it is to die for!

Yes I have had German Potato Salad before. I am not a big fan of it. I think I would rather have a twice baked potato. But I have purchased it for picnic dinners. Other people will eat it.

It sounds good. I don't normally eat potato salad because it is smothered in mayo and mustard. Yeach. Your recipe looks great. I would switch to fake bacon, but I'm weird.
