I'm leaving to spend $300

Today is grocery shopping day and I normally spend about $300. It last 3/4 of the way into the month. The cupboards are full and its such a satisfying feelings. Of course, when the cupboards are full and you go to get something to eat, there is never anything you want! LOL! Why is that? Do you do your grocery shopping in one lump sum, buy it as you need it or do intermittent shopping during the month?

My wife and I differ on this one. I would go every day and she likes to go once a week. I argue that if go, I buy exactly what we need, whereas if we buy weekly, we but what we think that we need and usually spend more. I can budget on $65 a week for food items only. I got many of my best recipes from myLot! What I really don't like is when we do both daily and weekly, then the cost really escalates.

No offense, but men seem to be able to go and get just what they need, because they usually don't like shopping. As for shopping on a daily basis, those food costs will add up real quick.

No offence taken. Maybe men find it easier to plan one meal at a time. Whereas women are able to se the whole week in their mind. I certainly can't think as far ahead as Friday on Monday.

I normally do one fairly big trip at the beginning of the month and then I go for things we need about once a week. I can never seem to find anything to eat when I go to the pantry either. I try to not keep much snack food around though, so if I want something I have to cook it.

I used to love to cook, once upon a time, but now I hate it. I used to bake everything from scratch, make my own gravies, you name it. Now if it doesn't go in the microwave and can't be heated quickly it makes me groan really loudly. LOL.

I don't know. I kind of find doing grocery shopping a bit of a chore. Theres the going there, the arguing over whats going to be bought, the carrying it home and finally the putting it away. By that time you don't feel like cooking anything.

i'm more of the latter. i tend to buy stuff throughout the month. since my hubby is sometimes duty overnight, if i buy in a lump, there might be extra and most stuff wouldn't be too fresh. stuff for eating i mean. as for the others like detergent and all, i only buy them when they're finishing.

I don't like buying too much throughout the month, because it seems to cost more that way.

true, it can cost more but for me, some months, it'll be more but on others it'll be less as i won't really need much on those months. and it's also quite convenient as i don't have to lug so much stuff. but of course, if my kids are older and all, i might consider buying on a lump though i might miss some things as i might forget. but that is a good point that you gave. thanks

Well, it's just me and my dad here here so we do our shopping "buy as you need it" We don't buy alot so it will stay for long and maybe spoil or get old on us. We spend about 100USD or more for the month though. Bet it wouldn't be any different if we shopped in one lump sum anyway.

I have an 11 year old son that would eat me out of house and home if I allowed it. But I would never deny him eating, so I buy plenty.

I love your avatar. I actually don't spend too much in between shopping trips. The biggest one was today and in about 2-3 weeks I'll do another trip for the rest of the month. I don't usually need alot in between.

we do not have a car so my son goes for groceries and picks up what he can carry, so we make several trips at a time.

Thats completely understandable if you don't have transportation, but it sure must get expensive.

We should once a week. Milk can only last so long, and besides I happen to love vegetables and salads. Meat can last two weeks, but after that. I think it depends on who is in charge of the money, that you can never anything good to eat. My husband is a worse cheapskate than I am. Or should I say penny wise and pound foolish. His favorite words are "we don't need that,: and then he goes over to the meats that are more expensive and then I get a chance to say "we don't need that."

My boyfriend is the same way. He only will eat the 93% lean and naturally its the most expensive ground beef in the store.

We pretty much shop twice a month since that's when the roomie gets paid. I get paid twice too, but the first is my big pay day. So, we paid about $500 but that includes gas, cat food/litter, etc.

$500 includes gas, food and other things for an entire month for two people? Pretty darn good.

You must have a lot of mouths to feed, I am down to about 120$ that last about a week and a half. It is just me and my two sons and I have been trying to shop savy and save more money at the grocery looking for sales and using more cupons.

I purchase perishable items once or twice every two weeks. Everything else i try to wait for once a month when i travel to Lloydminster with my mom where groceries are all cheaper. I'm bad for wanting something thats not in my cupboards even though the cupboards are stocked.

My shopping for perishable items has become just about null and void these days. In the Phoenix heat, things go bad before we can use them, so fresh vegetables and fruit are being added at a minimum in our house.

It would be hard to justify buying food that was going to spoil right away in the heat...I'd prefer not to in that case too!

We shop once a week but wind up making a few trips during the week to get something we forgot. Now with gas so high now I am going to try to just make one trip

I think the increasing cost of gas is making everyone take a second look at making more trips than they have to.

We do our shopping once a week, and spend nearly $200. Of course I feed a family of 7, so that's pretty good for us.

That is really good for a family of 7. You have more than twice the number of people we have.

Well, they're mostly little kids that don't eat much, plus I get some help. I am on a program called WIC that gives me free baby formula, milk, eggs, and a bit of cereal, so that saves some money. I supplement the free formula with a no name brand, and make the bottles with half the free formula and half the cheap stuff I buy, so it lasts longer. I also buy all my meat in bulk at a wholesale club, along with a few other things, so that saves some money as well. I have recently started buying my produce at the farmer's market instead of at the stores, and I've started my own vegetable garden to help relieve that cost as well. The remainder of my shopping is done at Walmart Super Center, where the prices are usually better than a regular grocery store. I also try to make most things from scratch. I no longer buy packages of cookies, instead I'll buy chocolte chips and make the cookies myself. Healthier and cheaper. I've started making my own bread and muffins too. And I don't buy boxed or packaged dinners as they don't create enough food without buying 2 or 3 which would cost nearly $20. I just buy the ingredients for $10 and make twice as much, so we can use the leftovers for lunch or another meal.

I wish I had the courage to shop for a months worth of groceries. I shop once a week and I spend on average 70 - 100 bucks per trip. But it can be a pain to shop that often. Some things I buy in bulk, like ceral, pastas, chicken and soups.

If you buy in bulk then you are probably saving money. I think the weekly trips to the grocery store though can be somewhat expensive. Buying all at one time saves money in my eyes.

You are probably right, I should try it sometime. I'm afraid I might forget what all I have in the cubbard for dinner!

I go grocery shopping once a week and spend about $125. It doesn't last the whole week usually and by the end of the week the cupboards are bare,(mother Hubbard reference lol). The kids always complain that there is never anything to eeeeat!!! But even before when I've spent double the amount of money on groceries, they eat all the "good stuff" in a day or two and then complain: "there's nothing to eeeeat!!!!" So I get to spend less to hear the same complaint. ;) Also, we end up at the convenience stores throughout the week as well. Usually I will go to buy a cup of coffee and the kids tag along to buy snacks with their OWN money that they are somehow able to come up with when they really want something that I didn't budget for. lol!

My son does the same thing. Eats all the treats in a day or two and complains loudly that there isn't anything to eat. And will be the first to spend his allowance at the corner convenience store. LOL.

I do my shopping every 10 days... and as I have a one hour drive to get into town... I better get it right. lol I don't have that problem when I look in my cupboards. I know what I like... and I buy what I like. lol So I have a variety of food to satisfy all my needs. But I really need to be organize and make a list each time I go into town. Forgetting something is not an option. A trip into town cost me $25.00 in gas. That would be an expensive bread if I forget the bread. lol

An hour to do your shopping? Ouch. Yes, I agree you should make yourself a list. I can just go down to the corner store and could even walk it if I had to, although nothing is really that important that I'd take up walking in this heat.

Yep that is so true and it always happens, what you fancy at the time of the shopping trip is never what you fancy on another day! Up until recently I was doing a weekly shop, and then the prices went up and things were starting to exceed my budget. Not being very impressed with this I decided to try things a different way, there is no way that I am putting my shopping budget up. So I switched to buying what I needed on a daily basis, I am out everyday taking the kids to school and so this is not a problem. I have set myself a time frame of a month of doing it, just to see if I save anything by doing it this way. So far in the 2 weeks that I have done it for I have saved £40 GBP ($80 approx) so I am rather impressed with myself.

That is a nice little savings. Anything you can do to save a little bit at the grocery store is a help.

hi kb i tend to shop four times a month usually as I have to eke out my social security check. I shop online for most stuff as I have no car and carrying groceries on the bus' is very hard for me. now I have a little more leeway as i just got my bush's economic stimulus check for three hundred' dollars oh my goodness. I can even pay my doubleday bookclub account now. thats just terrific.

Yeah, Hatley. I'll bet you are thrilled that you got that stimulus check. Every little bit helps. I know what its like to have to carry groceries on a bus and its no fun thats for sure.

I think you end up spending a whole lot more if you buy a little at a time.
