The pros and cons of literary agents

I've self-published two books to date with my third one on the way and lately I've been looking into literary agents but somewhat stomped and unsure has to go about. I've also read in very subtle ways the advantages and disadvantages of using literary agents and wondering if anyone here as used one before or has an agent and can offer pointers as to what to look for in an agent as well as the caution signs. Also any pointers on how to get started by this route would be most welcomed. Thanks in advance
