Well dad has not smiled this big in ages. I set Missy my daughters baby racoon on his shoulders. She was licking his ear and neck. Dad loved it and smiled so widely I couldn't believe it. It is amazing what a small bundle of furry joy can do to an old man. And to me as well. When my daughter and her hubby started to leave he mentioned having to get the racoon. I said, "WHAT RACOON?" I would have loved to have kept it. I feel in love with her. Have you ever had a wild animal as a pet at all?

No, but I do love all the furry creatures and actually feel that all creatures which have ever lived (and the humans too(!) will populate the promised "new heavens and new earth" and my favorite bible verses are "the lion will" (once again) "eat straw like the ox.. a small child will be able to play at the entrance to the poisonous snake den, and the bear will graze with the cow.." - another favorite is "everyone will live under their own vine and fruit tree.." - "the people will be able to sleep in the forest..". Animals are wondrous creations..

Hmm, no I was never fast enough to catch 'em, lol. I'm terrified of snakes so I wouldn't have one of them. My mother has a feral cat that a neighbor brought home and it started staying at mom's house. Now that mom lives with us she has started coming here for her meals and bringing her kittens too.

That's great that your dad got such joy from the racoon. We aren't allowed to keep wild animals as pets here in IL so, no, we never had one. Hubby wants a baby skunk but no can do.

Not necessarly what I consider wild, like raccoons or squirrels, but my hubby does like to collect fence lizards, and you know those are smart little buggers! They love to be held, and petted once they get used to you. The only part I don't like is their favorite meal is moths, and I had to help catch them to feed the lizards. I know though that if it was me catching them or the lizards doing it naturally outside, it would still happen, survival of the fitess and all that.

Fence Lizards are the little green lizards that run around the porch all summer, and hide under the bushes an rocks.

It's great what a animal or child can do to anyone's attitude. I'm glad he smiled, he genuinely looked happy. But taunting your dad like that, you should be ashamed... lol i'm kidding about that.
I was actually going to say that I hadn't had a "wild" animal but I suppose I have had a "wild" animal... maybe not in the same sense of the word.
A frog, yes I had a frog. I think it was a bullfrog but I'm not sure, it was a big frog.... and he was a nice pet, I don't remember what we called him but I remembered that my dad accidentally killed the frog by slamming the door open one time.

I am ashamed. NOT! It wasn't taunting.
He did not know what it was at all. That can be called
a wild animal as it wasn't from a pet store etc. YIKES! Killed by someone exiting a room by the door as it
slammed behind them.

aww..well no doubt about it...maybe you need to get some kind of pet for your dad...how about a little kitten or would Buster be too jealous? He does look very happy though
For awhile there I was taking care of baby birds..sparrows, one I adopted as a pet and named him Chippy, and cause he was never too strong enough to let him go is the reason I kept him..then one time I "adopted" a starling that for some reason couldn't fly...there was nothing wrong with him either...no broken wings or legs...he just couldn't fly--every time he did try the silly bird, Arnie I called him, would fall over backwards.

No more pets. He is happy with Buster. Buster actually just sniffed at Missy nthe racoon a few times then it was back to sniffing his territory in the backyard as usual. I would love to have a small bird like a finch I see out front as a pet. Not the store bought finches though.

He looks very happy! Animals are wonderful and can bring out the best in us. They have nothing but love and it's very hard not to be infected by it. I'm glad they're taking dogs and cats into nursing homes to bring a little joy to the patients there.

As a matter of fact, my sisters were notorious for bringing home stray animals and keeping them hidden in the house from my dad. We found 3 flying squirrels one afternoon while playing in the woods at my grandmothers and took them home. My mom knew we had them, my dad didnt. Anyway, day number 2 of hiding the little critters one of them got out of my sisters room and disappeared. We searched the house frantically to find it before my dad got home from work, to no avail. That evening my dad "decided" that the living room windows needed to be opened to let some air in. He got about 5 foot from the window and out flew that squirrel right into his chest. My sisters and I were horrified thinking that he would hurt it from fright, or have a heart attack himself. He turned around, with this critter (as he called it) clinging to his chest half smiled and half sighed and asked "whos gonna take care of it and how many more are there?" We eventually had to get rid of them because we didnt know how to properly take care of them. My parents took them to the vet and he turned them over to someone that could raise them.

I have never had a wild animal as a pet before, but my Dad did once, he had a wood pigeon that he rescued when it had been run over. It was really strange, wood pigeons are massive and it used to sit in their bedroom on top of their wardrobe. It hated me, I could not get near it, I would just get pecked but it loved my dad.

Hi Grandpa Bob I am so glad the baby racoon made your
dad smile. when I was sick in the hospital two years
ago a lady came in with the cutest puppy dog, a
cocker spaniel. she had a business going of pets for
'seniors and brought the dog in to our room. Both
I and my sick neighbor in bed two got such a charge
'out of that pretty little puppy. I got to hold it
and pet it. the theory is that contact with pets
helps the senior citizens healthwise. I always wanted a baby raccoon. old mr possum is not at all friendly as he steals
in at night and if you see him, he hisses at you. darn.
