IP stands for Internet Protocol and an ip address is very simply the address of your computer which is written as: xxxx.xxxx.xxxx.xxxx. Computers have addresses pretty much the same way that houses have addresses and it is the ip address that allows you to locate any computer on the internet, as long as you know their ip address. There are two kinds of ip addresses, public and private. A private ip address is known only to the computers within the local area network and they communicate to the outside world through a gateway which has a public ip address. The gateway is smart enough to know which computers to send a packet to when receiving packets from the outside world (internet).

As rightly said by my friends, IP address is the adress of the computer to which you want to get connected. On internet every machine has a unique address in the form of XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX. thus this number denotes the adress of the required machine. When we request to a IP address the request is send to server and then is redirected to the machine of given IP adress.

Although each IP address is unique to an internet connection/computer, otherwise, any site you view wouldn't know where to send the information to, unless you have a static address, every time you reconnect, it will be different.

Alright talking about IP Address: IP address is like your home address. Imagine the snail mail, it's written there the address where the letter comes from and where it goes. There are many classes of IP address but let's go only to basic, as to minimize the confusion. Public IP address are the ones that are needed to registered. Actually, if you want to have a public IP address then you have to buy it but that's not practical only if for personal use. Examples of public IP addresses: 125.160.xxx.xxx and 123.123.xxx.xxx. Now for private IP addresses, they are usually used in local area network. One best example is the computer shops except for server (or gateway) maybe. It can be assigned static or dynamic. This is can't be seen from public and it's free. Examples of private IP address: 10.0.0.0 , 172.16.0.0 and 192.168.0.0 . Note: In order to communicate to the internet, the network or computer must have a public IP Address. If you have a business and lots of computer then probably you have a public IP address, but if you're only a single user, which is connected to Internet Service Provider (like PLDT or SmartBRO.. etc) then you only have a private IP address. Note: You can check your IP address if you want: For Windows Go to: Start run type "cmd" or "command" type "ipconfig". -- And yeah.. for update.. most of the IP addresses are IPv4 but we already have IPv6.

whenever a computer connects ito the internet it's isp assigns him an adress so any other pc can connect to it and send and receive data. therefore this ip is unique to your pc and it's the only one that has it. for more detailed info visit www.wikipedia.org and sarch it

IP address is used for specified computer's address in the Internet. Thus, it has to be a unique number for each computer. You may seen the words "public IP" and "private IP". Public IP is the address that we can access publicly in the Internet. But, private IP is the address that uses for specified address in the private network for example school, offices, etc. You can think of Internet is the interconnection between networks around the world.
