How many times a day do you open the refrigerator?

I heard on the radio this morning that on average, a person opens the refrigerator 22 times per day. I was shocked because I thought it would probably be between 5 and 10 times, although I've never actually kept track.
What do you think of this statistic? Do think it's accurate? How many times do you open the refrigerator each day? If you aren't sure, keep track each time you open it for a day and please revisit this discussion to let me know what you discover!

Maybe if there are 3-5 or more in the family, that is correct and even higher than that JJ...LOL, if I will make an estimate in our house, maybe we will just average into 10-15 times, mY husband and I. I love drinking water with ice cube so I always open the fridge for cubes..LOL

Yea, we have an old model fridge, so I need to open it just for the cube..LOL! If I drink 6 glasses of water in a day, that is also the number of times, i will open it.LOL! Maybe if my husband is also going home every lunch, it will be close to 22 times also!Cheers!

That's really funny you would mention opening the fridge (freezer) to get ice cubes because some people don't have to open the fridge to get them, they have a dispenser-type deal in front that they can put their glass under to get them. So I guess that throws a whole other spin on this discussion! (LOL) People who have refrigerators like yours would have to open theirs more than people like me who have an ice dispenser on the outside. Wow, I'm really glad you brought that up because it's a great point! I know what you mean about having a nice, cold glass of ice water. There's nothing like it, especially now that the weather is warm out. Thanks for your response. It was fun to read, as always!

I believe that those statistics are acurate, but it doesnt seem like they are simply because noone keeps track of how often they open the refrigerator,I find myself opening it more than I need to cause,I will open it and look inside for what I want, close it,and then sometimes find myself opening it again, but I can never figure out why I do it lol.

I completely understand what you mean! It's like, who cares how many times we open the fridge? (LOL) Someone with nothing better to do, of course, would try to figure out how many times on average a person or household opens the fridge. It's actually quite odd I'd visit this discussion again today because I lost power at my condo on Sunday afternoon (two days ago now), so I actually do care very much how many times I open the fridge because I can't open it; otherwise, all of my food will spoil. Of course, going on three days without power, I might as well just throw out all those goodies that have now turned to a thawed mush. Ugh...I hate storms and tornadoes. You have to love all the excitement, though! (LOL) Sorry...I thought I'd vent in this comment to you. Hope you don't mind. I think that's great that you're patterns are similar to my pathetic habits. I don't even care how many times I open the fridge on a "normal" day. I don't think it matters. I just thought the statistic was interesting. Thanks for your input. I like your response.

I'm happy to return to this discussion once again to let you know my fridge (power) is working now! It took them from Sunday afternoon until Friday afternoon to get it working! It must've been a bad storm. Unfortunately, I opened my fridge a couple times recently to throw out all the food that had spoiled. Ugh...hate when that happens. Oh well. Thanks again for your input. I'm glad we understand each other's habits!

Lol I am glad to hear that you understand what I am saying, and someone with no life and too much time on their hands would try to figure out how many times they open the refrigerator, and yeah the only time you should care is when you lose power, because you cant afford to have it open too much, because stuff goes bad,and if it has been three days, then I would throw out everything, and no I do not mind lol,lol and I am glad that my patterns are close to what you call your pathetic habits lol,and the statistics are interesting, and I was more than happy to give you my input, and I am glad you liked my response, have a good day my friend, good luck in your life, and Happy Posting.

Getting food out of the fridge is much easier if you know it's something that's ready, and you will be able to eat it right away. You are one of the people that makes this statistic true! (LOL) Thirty times sounds like a lot, but I'm sure it's not. Thanks for sharing. I'm sure you keep a lot of food ready in the fridge just waiting for the next time you open it! (LOL) Thanks.

i hardly open the fridge! i think i open the fridge at least five times daily. when putting food inside or getting out food. i don't get cold water from the fridge because we have a water dispenser. i think if i sum up all the times that the fridge is opened by all of us, it would exceed the 22 times a day average.

I know for me, my dog definitely causes that number to go up since his (canned) food stays in there after it’s opened. I feed him once in the morning and once at night, so other than opening it for my own needs I do so at least twice extra - no, I take that back because I’d have to open the fridge at least four times for him, twice to take it out and twice to put it back in. (LOL) It’s hard to keep track, but I think with just me and my dog I still exceed that number.

Yep I tend to open the refrigerator way to often it seems like everytime I go downstairs I open the refrigerator even though Im not hungry. I guess its because its a bad habbit or that it has a mind of its own and its calling out to me for me to open it lol. I know my mom gets pissed off that I open the refrigerator way to much since it waste electricity.

That's funny what your mom says about it. (LOL) I don't really think it's too much of a waste of electricity. You buy a refrigerator to put things in it and to open and close the door! It keeps the food cold or frozen, but it's still made to be opened. I guess you could argue it's can take up extra electricity when you open the door so much because the light usually comes on each time it's opened and then shuts off when the door is closed. (LOL) I've never thought about it too much! I'm glad you're like me because I'll open the fridge just to see what's in there to eat even if I don't pull anything out. Thanks for your response. I feel much better about my bad habits now!

Hi I open mine about 12-15 times a day so well below average but the majority of the time there is only me here, when the girls are home that would at least double as they will go into the kitchen and just open to look to see if any goodies inside to eat and close angain before looking through cupboards. Ellie :D

I love how you referred to the progression of the hunt for food the girls go through when they get home. (LOL) First it starts with the fridge...then the pantry...typical. I like how you gave me the number of times you open the fridge per day, which by the way, sounds like a very good, average number. I don't think there's anything abnormal about your household habits in that respect. Thanks for sharing! I enjoyed reading your response...and how the number you gave me can double or even triple as more people come home. (LOL)

I'm sure pregnancy competely obliterates that statistic (LOL). I already have cravings for certain foods, juices, candy, etc., and I'm planning on waiting a few years after my fiance and I get married to have children. I was just telling one of my friends this morning about another craving I had for pumpkin bread. If I'm having these kinds of cravings a few years before I have kids, just think how they'll be when I'm actually pregnant! (LOL) You make me feel much better about getting in the fridge. It was just last night that I found myself springing from my comfy place in the bedroom and going into the kitchen in hunt for a nice midnight snack. (LOL) The starving feeling in my stomach this morning was definitely worth it! Thanks for your response.

You're right, and I think that's why they say it's an average number of times a person would open the fridge in a day. It really does sound like a lot, doesn't it? I think I opened it twice yesterday and once today so far. I guess it really all depends on a person's daily habits, like you said. If they're outside all day, if it were really hot out, I'd hope they'd at least open it once to get a cold bottle of water! (LOL) Thanks for your response.

If you just use it in the evening, then that number definitely makes sense. I'm like you, I don't use it all that often because I get up, pack my lunch, opening the fridge only once or twice, and go to work. I eat breakfast and lunch at work, so I don't get in there then. I only open the fridge after that for dinner since my snacks usually don't involve opening the fridge anyway...unless, of course, I could go for ice cream or something frozen for my snack. (LOL) Thanks for sharing.
