Any common words, you have MISSPELT ?

I have the habit of misspelling some words, until when my sister noticed and corrected it.
I used to spell the word Separate as Seperate, and another word, Cylinder, as Cyclinder.
In fact, i have been spelling the word separate, as SEPERATE for long, long time and i got the same corrected by her, a year back.
And the second word cylinder, as Cyclinder, all through the school days and one day, i surprisingly noticed in a paper, that it was spelt as cylinder.
O! then the thought process, O! god... how many people would have seen this.. why is it no one pointed it out to me..? Have they enjoyed my mistake silently? What a shame on me?
But quickly, i recouped myself that those people are not 100% correct, and felt happy that at least i corrected it now.
Any such experiences which you have friends?
Cheers.

We Indians are tooooooooooo worried about our spelling and grammar. I don't think even the natives care as much as we do. By the way, I enjoyed your "cyclinder"! It was great fun. Having been an English teacher for six years, I was forced to read absolute crap, which the students called their "papers." So I am used to all sorts of misspelled words and grammatical errors. At first, I could enjoy it. Later, I used to feel sick. :) No wonder I did not last long in that profession.
Cheers and happy misspelling! If I were you, I wouldn't worry so much, unless I wanted to become an English professor or a journalist or writer.

I am happy that you enjoyed, but i am lucky that you are not my teacher. In a way, you must also consider yourself as lucky one, because had i been your student, i would have compelled you to, quit teaching very much before than you did actually.
And i must add, another quick thing before i submit, its my undying ambition to take up freelance writing.
Thanks for responding friend.

Hi saivenkaat802003! I think we all have spelled words incorrectly one time or the other. Nobody is perfect as we all used to say. haha..And just like I think that maybe it was just a typographical error that has been committed.
Take Care and Have a beautiful day! God Bless you my friend.

I had trouble with the i-e part in spelling, like receive or society... I think I'm better now, but I still double check what I write, and would be happy to be corrected.
I don't correct people here in mylot because I know it's only normal here to misspell. But if I find a misspelt word a friend had written, I will try to correct him or her. I guess it's better that way, than being corrected by their boss, or someone they're applying for, or maybe a stranger.
Sometimes I don't understand why some people don't like being corrected. We're only doing them a favor. Aren't they embarrassed to show others their misspelt words? Not that I think I'm perfect because I'm not. I just believe that if there's something wrong, then we should correct it. It's not natural to just let something wrong just go on and on.

From your words i feel that the misspelling is problem is a common thing.
But people fail to point it out others, because, they would feel that it will have a digg at their friends ego, or sometimes it may send a wrong signal in the minds of the one who had made a mistake, as if the person correcting the mistake is trying to establish his/her superiority over the other.

It is very much of our humna nature to do those silly little mistakes again and again.Like i said this habit has already been fixed inside our brains when we were young and at the time if learning new words.A little less attention at that time may have led to this habit.
For my commonly misspelt words,i would like to say that the words which have the letters 'ie' in succession confuse me alot, for example, recieve or receive, belief or beleif....etc...i still make mistakes in spelling these words as i used to when i was still a student.

Surely, friend, as you said, these are small things that are shown least importance, in our learning curve. Unless, it gets noticed one day, and where on we try to erase the wrong imprints in our brain.
And the word RECEIVE, IS a good example. I have one friend, spelling it wrong even today.
When someone tries to correct him, he would retaliate that " You know what i mean by this word, with this spelling. So, there is nothing harm even if i write reaceive or receave
Till this time he is reluctant to correct himself.

Take care friend. Enjoy life till the last minute.

maybe no one has noticed that you misspelled those words! or maybe they think you just unknowingly made a mistake. or maybe they just don't care. or maybe they don't know the right spelling that's why they are hesitant to correct you. ^__^;;
i'm not gonna brag but i seldom commit misspelling. whenever i write something, i always make sure that the spelling is correct and if i'm not sure about it, i'd look for it in the dictionary. ^__^ but there's also some words that i usually erase after the first time of writing it because i would misspell it. one of it is the word "occasion". except for today, i sometimes forget that the double letter is c and not the s. ^__^;;

I know that nobody's perfect and one minimal error is misspelling words at one point in our lives. I have to admit that I'm guilty of this fault, too.
And at this moment, there are only two words which I could think that I often misspelled; and these are occasion and maintenance. I used to spell occasion as ocassion because I'm confused with the stress when it's being pronounced. I even used to think that it would be better to spell it as occassion so that I wouldn't miss any double c or s there. Now, I personally find this thought funny. Then, I also used to misspell maintenance as maintainance. I'm rather perplexed with maintain (which is a verb), and maintenance (which is a noun). So I tend to combine the spelling of these two words in a single word to become the erroneous 'maintainance'.
I guess there are still other words which I misspell but I can't think of them right now.

Exactly mykmari, you have pointed out the other words that i have forgot to mention here.
It is "occasion". Every time, i type it i used to put "Occassion",and my Firefox would underline the word with a red line. Also i have another word in store, How about the word " SUCCESSION". Sometimes it leads me to a confusion whether it is two c's or a single c.
And i have sent you friends request, Hope that you consider me.
Thanks for sharing your views.

I know good spellers are in the minority, but mistakes in publications really bother me; especially in a newspaper or a magazine that has an editor.
HELLOOO! Editor-person are you awake?
It drives me CRAZY when I, myself, put something in print or send a post only to see, too late, that I made a spelling error or typo. Usually I just make typos, but I do have trouble remembering the spelling of certain words and seperate/separate is one of them. I also can never remember how to spell "ocassionnally" "occasionally" "occassionally" or whatever!

Hi mclendon, welcome to mylot. Thanks for taking time to read my topic.
As you said, it is really annoying to see an unnoticed typo. Recently some days back, i started a topic, about Sharon Stone, titling "Sharon Stone Pleading Innocent, says [b]HE /b] has misspoke."
In which i have made a typo as he instead of she
Later only after submitting the topic i found it, but there is no way to correct. Oops...

You kidding? I mis spell words almost everyday... Not that it's a good thing but since english is my second language, it's even worse... Most of my friends understands I misspell words for that they do themselves... I do have this one lady I work with who constantly corrects me & it's rather annoying... At my work, there's is system in a computer that we leave notations or messages for co-workers, managers & even vendors... Nobody does this except this one lady... Everytime I leave her a message, weather it be reguarding delivery set up, delivery issues, date chages, cancellations, or whatever it happens to be for, she always picks out the words I mis spell or wrong grammer & lets me know that it was wrong... After a while, I just started ignoring her..

lol I spell things wrong all the time, that is why I use mozilla, it seems to know that I can't spell and will underline all the words misspelled and I can go back and fix them.
I do have a friend that I talk to all the time on aim and if I misspell he will correct it. I let him know that it is annoying and that if he can figure out was I was trying to spell then why does he need to correct it?!
I don't think that a lot of people here care one way or another if you spell the word wrong and when I see words that are spelled wrong I just assume they are not in the US and that is how they spell where they are at. An example would be favorite, here in the states that is how it is spelled but I notice that people from other counties put a "u" in there somewhere.

Surely, Favorite is spelt even in our country as Favourite, and most of us don't accept that favorite as correct spelling here, in my country.

No one has pointed it out to you, because everyone makes mistakes while they're typing. Me too, make a lot of mistakes which go unnoticed. I'm not English but though I try my best to spell the words correctly I still make a lot of mistakes. These are my most common ones: their and they're - defEnitely - which and that - "to" and "too" , and so on..
But I guess it isn't that important or something to be ashamed of (except in official lettres), because the main importance is that people are able to understand you and as long if this is the case, there shouldn't be a problem.

Hi jensgeukens,
Thanks for sharing your ideas on this topic.
Actually, i don't mean here the typo's that we make while we type, those are made in an unintentional way. But what i mean is, those words that we misspell, thinking that it is the correct spelling of the word.
As told by me, in the topic, i have been misspelling the word, "Cylinder" as "Cyclinder" for long long time, thinking that it is the correct one.
This is what, i am inclined to know from my friends, that have you ever had such kind of experiences.
Anyway, thanks again for sharing your views. Take care and have a good time.

It is quite common for people to misspell words for most of their lives until someone points it out. I am very fussy about spelling and always make a point of telling my colleagues (usually discreetly by email or similar) if I notice they regularly spell something incorrectly. I don't have any particular words that I have a problem with but in general I notice people misspelling the following:
definitely - misspelt as definately
you're - misspelt as your (when the person is trying to say "you are" in short)
too - misspelt as to (when you mean also)
their - misspelt as there when you talk about something belonging to someone or
they're - misspelt as there when you mean to say "they are" in short
I guess there is one word I have to think carefully about quite often and that is occasion, I often go to spell it as ocassion but as I tend to write most of my stuff in Word for online writing, it corrects it automatically for me :)
