Big City Drivers

Why is it someone always pulls out in front of me and then slows down? I drive an suv which is totally visible to all drivers. It's not like a silver suv can't be seen. I could be going 60 mph on the highway and someone will cut in front of me and will be going 45 or 50. I can be responsible for my actions in slowing down but the people behind me could be another story. I could be going 35 to 40 in the city and someone will pull right out in front of me. I am guessing that other drivers just trust everyone on the road and are sure the person they cut off will slow down. It can be terribly frustrating. Does this happen to you?

That happens to me all of the time! I keep swearing there's a sign on both my car and my truck that says "Idiots...pull in front of me please"! It's so aggravating. And like you, I worry about the drivers behind me not being able to slow down in time, especially when I'm in my little car. I feel like they might barrel over the top of me or something.

The other drivers are not always older and not always on their cells either. I was going 60 yesterday and some guy pulled in front of me and was going 40. Whew, glad I am fairly patient when driving. Thanks for responding.

This happens to my husband and I often. We have a saying, "We must be invisable." I saw the other way around the other day, a canary yellow small car was cut off by an SUV and I thought I was going to be a witness to an accident. The person in the SUV looked like she was looking past the car instead of down, like where she wanted to be. Rainy day, too, sometimes you can't even stop on those days. People are nuts.

I like driving an suv because I am up higher and can see all around me and keep an eye on other drivers. I won't take advantage of another driver and cut them off and expect the same respect in return. It doesn't happen! Thanks for responding.

I have that problem sometimes too and that drives me nuts. Those people can get rearended if someone does not have very good brakes or paying close attention. Then you have to crawl like a turtle behind them if you cannot pass them. I hate when I have the cruise control set also and have to adjust it because of their slowness and cutting me off. They act like they are in such a hurry when they pull out in front of you and then they just crawl like it is a Sunday drive or something.

I think everyone in our big city doesn't pay attention to others on the road as much as they should. Many distractions which causes other problems. I get annoyed but have to stay focused on the cars around me. Thanks for responding.

Not just big city drivers but also small town drivers do this crap. My pet peeve with drivers is they pass you up, cut back over in front of you only to slow down to make a turn. I'm like...ummmmmmmmmm..couldn't u just stayed behind me and make the turn w/o being so rude to me.Happens all the time and I won't slow down till I'm on their tail and then brake.

I know exactly how you feel. This happens to me all the time when I'm on the highway. I'll be going 60, someone passes me and slows to 40. Traffic behind me gets right on my butt and I've been fortunate never to be rearended. Also driving in the city, like you mentioned, someone gets around me, slows and then stops to turn. Good thing I always pay close attention. Thanks for responding.

I live in Baltimore, where both drivers a pedestrians are insane. People will cut you off then ride the break for 10 miles. Its not uncommon to see someone on "the beltway" driving 45mph with their blinker on the entire time. When you are in the city, I work in Downtown, the pedestrians will just jump out into the middle of the road to get across the street. They know that they have the right of way, and that you have to stop for them.. This actually happened to me the other day when I was driving past Johns Hopkins University. All I could thing was wow, this is one of the most elite medical schools in the country, you figure they would have more sense. And they will probably one day be treating JHU studens that didnt make it across the street.

No kidding. I am in St. Louis and it's just crazy. We had storms again this morning and there were accidents all over the highway. People don't realize it gets slick and sometimes slicker than snow. Thanks for responding.

YES and I wonder the same thing! Like on an off street too..why do they pull in front of you so you have to slow down...then they turn at the next corner!!!! I think some people just don't have good judgement or they shouldn't be behind the wheel!

Some drivers don't drive defensively and just go. Taking advantage of other drivers can be dangerous. My driving record is excellent but I still make certain to watch everyone I can around me. Thanks for responding.

Yes it happens to us all I think. We have a bright red car and people act like they don't see it either.

Once upon a time I had a bright, red car and nobody noticed me either. Now I have a silver suv and other drivers see me coming. I'm not invisible. Taking advantage of other drivers is risky. Thanks for responding.

Wow. I don't have a license. Driving is really difficult for me. I can't hardly stand driving in the small town I live in. I can't imagine being in a big town or a big city and having to deal with all sorts of crazy erratic drivers!

Crazy drivers is the right word. People get in a hurry or drive at a snail's pace. Either way it causes problems for the other drivers. Thanks for responding.

It's the slow ones that cause the most problems especially when they pull right in front of an 18 wheeler doing the speed limit of 60mph @carolbee

You are not alone carolbee! Living in a big city, I can totally relate to this situation. I live in Miami which I just found out was the #1 place for road rage, and the kind of drivers you discuss is a big reason why. I have learned though to take a deep breath, smile and not let it get to me. I don't wanna beep at them and have them shoot me! It is frustrating, but just let it go.... It's not worth your frustrating or grief. Happy travels!
